I know this was against Broncos and their horrible edge defense, but I am just analyzing the use of decoys, amongst other stuff. So here our 5 try’s eels scored against broncos.
Electric, I wish there was a format where I could write both text and graphics and they all paste in at the same time when making the blog. But the graphics don't paste in and have to be added manually, one by one. Maybe I'm just a technical idiot?!
So what's your conclusion from breaking down those 5 tries, EA?
On the one hand, the pics show the Broncos sometimes marked 1-1 but other times did not count numbers properly. So we could say Broncos suck.
On the other hand, you show Mahoney's long passes continually put Eels players on the outside shoulder of defenders, which when combined with simple decoy runs, created saloon passages to the line. Eels attacked well.
For me, our red zone attack has improved. Especially on Moses' side. DBrown still has a way to go to get the attack flowing on his right side
Mahoney's passes from dummy half are superb. Gets the first receiver on the outside shoulder of their oponent numerous times. Causes an overlap straight away. When teams are fatigued, they slide slower, meaning its harder to stop the overlapp.
Brisbane's defence is horrible on that edge. That's why in the second half agaist Titans, Farnworth and Arthur switched sides. So Farnwroth and Coates were not defending together.
D Brown has been given more control on the eels right hand side, whereas Moses and Gutho play everywhere. Last year, D Brown was actually playing both sides of the field and squaring up the defense.
I thought D Brown was great against Broncos. He made a lot of half breaks and nearly put his outside men away a few times. I like that he now has the reigns on the right hand side. I just thought Oates defended really well on that side. Brown's deceptive ability when running the ball against Broncos was as good as I have seen from him.
Andrew John's effect on Moses is evident. Moses is running the ball at greater speed, and very direct, not side ways. He runs deep into the line and at his oponents to ensure there is an overlap straight of his pass.
Nathan Brown's playmaking ability needs to be used more often in oponents 20m line.
Gutho's passing game has improved. However, I feel at sometimes his pass selection is a bit off. He is lethal down the left hand side, as expected for right hand dominant players.
Opacic doesn't have the best ability to catch and pass. So Cartwright or Gutho need to do that role while Opacic acts as the decoy
I like when Paulo is outwide. Whether he is playmaking or just a decoy. He attracts a lot of attention. Even if nothing happens when Paulo is tackled. The next play is a great opportunity to attack because there would be a high density of defenders near the play the ball from Paulo's run.
Decoys are effective in attack. Obviosuly better teams will not conceed tries so early. However, decoys cause defenders to make defensive decisions under fatigue. Even if defenders make the correct decision, they still have to hold on the deocy before sliding which helps in putting the outside players on the outside shoulder of their oponents. This helps in breaking tackles and can cause panic as the winger can jam in, and leave their wing open.
"Right but there will be 8 weeks less of footy to put on TV. They get an extra 2 games a week but less to put on in those weeks.
Yeah Finals there's less games but it's finals they rate higher than normal but if you give them 2 extra games it is…"

Sorry for doing it in pdf files. It was hard to format on the actual blog.

So yep. The followig points can be made:
That 3rd try to Opacic was glorious.
When you analyse the work of Mahoney, Moses, Cartwright and Gutho, it is a really nice try.
