Gus noted, "If they've only got five players signed for 2026, and they're moving a lot of the current players on... where are the players going to come from?"

'Always been short-term thinking': Why Gus is worried for the Eels with mass-cleanout reports

It’s been a nightmare year, and it’s believed the Eels only have five players contracted beyond 2025 – and that’s concerned Phil Gould about where their players will come from.

    • Yeah the Doggies had a clean out but with Gus they were able attract some genuine top players and continue to do so.
We are shit and can't even attract flies.

  • They will come from our quality Flegg side and the player market, which opens in November.

    • I'm suprised with how confident you are in retaining our junior players. History is not on our side in that department my friend.

      • if we have room for them in our squad and our salary cap we'll keep them. If not, we don't need to.

  • Gus commented that right now the dogs have the youngest team in the competition. He said many players have between 10 and 20 games of nrl experience. This is how you build for the future. We need to be targeted in our recruitment and retention with a focus on youth, speed and a team first mentality. Big egos and those who are self centred can go elsewhere.

  • Matterson, RCG, Sivo, Lane, Cini, Asi, Dunster, Harper, Makatoa.
That's close to 3 Million in cap relief.

Sign: Hawkins/Weaver, Iongi, Lomax, Garlik, Waddell

Promote: Richard Penisini, Brazell, Alameddine, Ryley Smith.

We get younger, we get better. It's not that hard.

    • Nrl Cup
      Iongi Twiddle
      Simonsson Tago
      Lomax W. Penisini
      Gutherson R. Penisini
      Alameddine Russell

      Paulo Ogden
      Garlik Lussick
      Joe O Greig
      Cartwright Kelma

      Guymer Mataele

      Hands Smith
      Waddell Brazell

      • JB, so you don't rate Martyn as a prospect - in contrast to EA/LB?

I'm not sure yet as I've only watched bits and pieces of him. Just wondering, why? Is he leaving?

PS: Also wonder if he's another on the Isaac #MeFirst caravan. Holy Moses. We need professional help to extract that cancer.

        • I think he is a superstar in the making. Exactly the Melb Storm type kid. Hopefully Ryles works some magic.
Just don't see Russell leaving/being signed elsewhere, probably have to wait another year for Martyn.

How are we feeling about Keir?

          • You know Martyn and Russell are the same age? And Martyn has barely played reserve grade.

"It's why freight is commonplace, and often a win-win. RCG & Waqa moved to the Eels after Ivan Cleary returned to the Panthers in 2019 (Gus gone). Despite being in contract, they were subsequently offloaded with freight paid for by the Panthers."
