Alex McKinnon and insurance

Before I get jumped on, I think it's great that they are rasing money for this young bloke. My question is do we have too, and if the answer is yes who is running this 2 bit outfit.Am I wrong to expect a professional sport either at the head office or at the club level would have adequate insurance? Anyone on this site that has operated their on business will tell you you must be fully insured.I hope this fund raiser is only an extra for this poor young bloke and not something he will be relying on.

  • I too have wondered this Brad, my guess would be that the insurance would be a basic cost of living sum and would only cover Alex for X amount of years, not the rest of his life in which judging by how bad his injuries ar, he will need money fora lot longer than what the insurance side of things will cover.

In saying that you have to wonder about it all as the nrl will surely give him a job at promoting the game as being safe and his injury was a freak accident. This is what Alex has come out today and said.
  • I don't believe the NRL has ever finalised or put in place an insurance policy to cover injuries and outcomes such as this. They do have 'slush' provisions but there is nothing saying they must cough up $X for example.

Pretty sure under the collective bargaining agreement signed maybe a year or 18 months or so ago, player wages have to be guaranteed for their contracts - Alex might be in this bucket however think back to Simon Dwyer, Tuaki, Daniel Conn etc - none of them were covered and they essentially rely on club goodwill.

The NRL have to find an insurance product - they are looking (have been for nearly 2 years), it's complicated, blah blah blah usual NRL tripe... then the clubs have to agree and also the players association. Clubs would be looking at pretty big money each year I would think to fund it.

As much as Alex deserves some support, in all of this I do feel sorry for the likes of those other guys who never received anything like the same...

  • I hope for his sake they do. I do remember similar promises for Adam Ritson but I don't think he has a job in the game any more, don't know if it was his chose or not.
  • Thank you will, I hope the answer is they find it and find it fast. Talk about what will stop parents putting their children into the game a shoulder charge or a life of care.
  • there should also be responsibility for his agent to organise permanent dusability insurance and income protection, health insurance
I am more concerned for long term welfare if the young kid that had same injury a week or so earlier
no job for life or rise for that kid weekend
  • The players association needs to address this urgently. This guys get busted up, yep it's what they love to do but most of the people that play this great game a very young and don't have much life experience. The players association is there to protect them, why are they letting this go on.
