A Question about Nepotism

I was wondering about the word  'Nepotism' especially in the light of it recently being brought up lately and so I did a Google search as we know Google knows everything, well almost. I discovered that 'Nepotism' isn't actually 'illegal' in the workplace which I found quite extraordinary. When I consider the amount of times I've personally seen people in power employ their friends and relatives over other applicants in workplace situations and they are actually getting away with it is quite unbelievable. So in essence Brad Arthur putting his son Jake in the side over other possible candidates isn't necessarily wrong.  What are people's experiences and thoughts about the use of Nepotism in the workplace and should it be illegal and what should be the consequences of people in authority who use Nepotism?

  • An NRL team is a bit different to an offsider or office clerk Monts.

PS I'm not condoning it's use in BA's case.

  • I think in some instances it should be illegal but every case is different

  • Forget about out BA/JA, that's just local, global nepotism? What about Anthony Field recruiting his 18 year old daughter into the Wiggles. How is that for nepotism.

    • lol

    • I think Anthony Field is the Boss so he can employ anybody he wants.

  • Nepotism is the norm. Every where in life. What makes sport special is it's meant to be different. Sport is meant to be the best athlete wins regardless of who their parents are or what school they went to, what god they worship or don't, what race they are.

Thats why nepotism in sport hurts so much. We look to sport as an escape from nepotism, but nope there it is again.

  • My understanding is nepotism is not illegal by law, but often written into company policy one way or the other. So although not against the law, it’s grounds for getting sacked if the top dogs give a shit.

  • Nepotism by law is not illegal however, it is somewhat frowned upon in most organisations as it provides a controlling vested interest over the "Fair Play" consideration. In regards to our club BA has played the long game with JA from having him around the Ist graders in pre-season training as a young teenager and slowly positioned him in and around the first team over the years to where he is now on the bench or a ready replacement for our halves. This in itself is BA promoting his family interest over the betterment of the club. It is clear to all and sundry and obviously the club condones it .... it is what it is until BA moves on.

    • So is what Brad Arthur doing classified as Nepotism or is he just doing what he thinks is best for the team and club? It's surprises me how so many people in places of authority not just in sporting codes but in Govt whether local, state or Federal often employ friends, relatives or known acquaintances and are never held accountable
