A New Attacking Structure Today?

This is where I can only speculate as I am currently unable to view any training. The Parramatta attacking structure has always involved a forward playing a link role. If it's not Seffa its Gowie. Both have played a similar role this year. The effectiveness of this role has been highly debated on this site for some time. When we examine the team list for the Warriors match, it is difficult to see a player with the same skill set as Gower or Paulo. To me this might indicate a change in the attacking structure. After Hindy snuck in to catch 20 minutes of training, he said an obvious structure that he saw was some of the direct runs made by Tep and Manu. Are we about to see a change?

  • I think we will see a big change, with both Norman and Kelly playing closer to centre field.
  • Will it mean therefore a more direct reception of the ball from dummy half to half?
  • Taking Seffa and Sandow out means it has to change. Kelly is a different type of half.

So here's hoping not only a change but a win.
    • Anything that stops Mannah from being 1st receiver continually in attack will add variety..

  • Maybe Kelly is there to play Seffas role? Watching Thurston at half last night makes a fan envious of teams whose half can take the game by the scruff of the neck. Whilst I'm a believer in the forwards dominating the ruck and setting up a platform for the halves, Thurston is just in a class of his own.
    • And yet the frustration of still not winning a comp.

You need the great player, but you need the team too.
  • We have seen the best from Norman when he got his hands on the ball a little wider, but I'm keen to see him get more direct ball.
    • I agree. Norman/taka/semi combo looked lethal before injuries popped up.
  • Norman's role will certainly change with Kelly playing the more traditional dominant 7, taking the attacking kicks and bombs.
*It will be more about the simple ruck plays coming out of our territory, with no fancy Sefa stuff.

*Wicks will play a James Graham type link role in the attacking zone.

*Watmough may be looked at as a ball player in the attacking zone to compliment Norman.

*more emphasis on keeping the pressure on with Kelly's short kicking game on the last tackle, rather than one of Sandow's gamble plays.

    * it will be about possession and putting the odds in our favor rather than a "gamble" - and hope.
    • I like this analysis of yours Chief. The last point is the most crucial. Two big gambles last week were costly. The double movement and the kick to Semi (and not going through hands to Semi). If the team is going well, those big plays seem to come off. When the team is struggling, things seem to go wrong. It's like a law of nature for it to happen!
