As much as this kills me to keep an arthur at the club imagine sanders and young arthur with 12 months of experience they would of got this year.. two young guns could of set the tone for the future. Yet we have some 1.3 million dollar bum and an injury prone old man.
Well put. This is what gets me mad. It's either incompetence or ignorance but it's definitely not strategic. Telling Sanders (and Talagi) his pathway was blocked but having Moses and Brown with get out clauses is just negligent.
There doesn't seem to be any long term plan in place at all. We're debuting juniors sure, but it's not translating into wins. As someone said Ryles and the Board haven't been here for 40 years. They see this year as year 1 and we should all be patient as they spend the next few years slowly building a Top 8 roster. No Premiership strategy or aspirations, we just merely want to be sort of competitive. And profitable. If we're lucky and the strong clubs fall over in front of us Steven Bradbury style then maybe we can win a Premiership one day. It's laughable where this club is currently.
How are we supposed to end a drought with decision making like this.
Its almost as though they've thrown the success or failure at the feet of the coach because they don't have a plan or a roadmap or just lack the knowledge how to build a sustained winner in the nrl.
By doing this and having this mentality there jobs are effectively protected.Parra needs players there's no argument there but we need a more credible ceo and gm of football first and foremost if we don't I can't say the arrows pointing in the right direction because you can't trust the mentioned to make critical decisions.
I will say your last part i agree with that we should never have been in this position. Post 2022, we should have rebooted losing those players. Simply we should have tried harder to keep Mahoney and Papali'i, even laughable that we had the money for Papali'i all along when he got cold feet. We lost Niukore (which is not the clubs fault as he got insane money and wanted to go back to NZ for family), Stone, Kaufusi, Mahoney and Papali'i. In the process re-signing RCG, Paulo, Brown and Matto.
Matterson re-siging was the biggest joke of it all since we gave him more than what we offered Papali'i and Mahoney, yet both them are more important than Matto. We gave Matto that deal as he was courted by Redcliffe and we lost a lot of player so to save face with losing another player they went to far above and beyond and gave Matto a 4 year deal worth around $600-650k a year. Had we signed Mahoney, Papali'i or both, Matto leaving i think would have been disappointing but we move on.
Then we felt "Well since BA got Papali'i up to be an elite type player, he can do the same with 5 of them". Unfortunately, BA could only do so much with the projects he was given. Then the Hodgson signing which is one eye on the future in 2025 with Matt Arthur, was a complete and utter failure. Idea made sense but failed miserably.
Come 2023 we should have rebooted or done a tiny rebuild. But held onto certain players longer than we should have, squeezing the lemon more than what it could have been squeezed. Ryles has cleaned out what probably should have been progressively moved on since 2023. This year should have been the benefit of starting again in 2023.
Instead of thinking 2023 might be rough but could build to where we need to be in 2024 or 2025 instead tried to say we are fine.
Mutts could you argue, now with Ryles, there could be a plan in place with him? Not saying it can be fulfilled with MON and co. but i feel Ryles has a plan. Though if come 2026 and we have signed minimum wage players then a little concerning.
Though as Coryn referenced, not premiership aspirations since nobody, other than Ryles, has seen success at a club in their roles.
When i read about people being annoyed about the COE being named after JH, at first i thought what's the problem is it really that big of an issue. Then the more i thought about it i thought no i understand and it makes sense. It is another sign of just taking money when we don't actually need it. Peter Sterling COE would have had a bigger response and would have gotten people onside, but that got people with a sour taste on a place that was meant to be a change in future.
I don't know how you can say that. This year was always about seeing what our juniors are producing, and getting them crucial NRL experience. Anyone can see the vast improvement in the team over the season so far. Unfortunately critical injuries have hampered the team's progression. Where to from here? I expect the club to fill critical gaps in our roster (forwards, hooker, centres) so that we can build into next year. Any talk of Premierships at this stage is pure fantasy. You can't get to your journey's end if you aren't looking at where you are stepping along the way. Success will inevitably come if we take the right paths, but it's foolish to look only to that goal.
BE, my debate partner, glad to have another one again i say that with respect not being smart.
Firstly i have two questions, i did write a reply but i decided to instead ask you two things to get a better understanding before i reply fully.
1) Are you saying the club could have still kept Sanders despite the clauses? Or more so in the direction of we should have decided to either have Brown and/or Moses sign proper deal, no clauses, and if not then go forward with Sanders. Do not say both as everyone, even me, agree the clauses were dumb.
2) If the first option, what would you have offered Sanders to convince to stay or more so what could the club have offered?
Again, i am not asking to be smart or anything, i generally am curious on your thoughts so i can understand your thoughts further.
One comment on this discussion, your all running in hindsight.
Essentially reviewing the past pointing out what happened. You either learn from your mistakes and move on or "wallow" in the past and feel sorry for yourself.
Ryles is doing what Finney is referring to, maybe making little mistakes but with eyes looking forward.
Everyone of those players we lost, there is a rationale. Not one of them has been breaking any records.
Not much went right through this whole time. I am comfortable going forward as long as we can get the players we want and that is very subjective......our record is not good.
Patience please!
Well put, hindsight makes things look bad when considered not at the time.
Ryles has a vision, whether bad or not he has one and just have to see how it goes not much can do about it but support Ryles as best we can.
100% agree mate! its becoming a real joke.
