2016 run on squad plus depth in each position analysis

Hi guys, I haven't done a lot of these so go easy on me. But with all the talk about player signings I think it'd be good to look at a "likely" run on squad (of course there will be changes after pre season form and injury) but more importantly the depth to back up what I believe is the building of a genuine premiership challenging team. I genuinely think we have address the main deficiencies incredibly well in both player signings and coaching appointments (covered in another blog).

Have a look here, I have listed who I believe will be the run on side but of course the backup depth for each position based on who we have signed currently.

PS Seriously improved side in 2016 I think.

1 Michael Gordon (Goal Kicker)

2 Semi Radrada

3 Clinton Gutherson (Backup Goal kicker which is nice)

4 Brad Takarangi

5 Bureta Faraimo

6 Corey Norman

7 Keiran Foran (Captain)

8 Tim Mannah (Vice Captain)

9 Nathan Peats

10 Junior Paulo

11 Beau Scott (Defending RHS with Foz and Gutherson)

12 Manu Mau

13 Anthony Watmough

14 Danny Wicks

15 Daniel Alvaro

16 Tepai Moeroa

17 Kenny Edwards

Here is the depth for each position I have identified so far.

Fullback Depth – Kieran Moss, Beven French

Winger Depth – Vai Toutai, John Folau, Ryan Morgan

Centre Depth – Vai Toutai, John Folau, Ryan Morgan

Halves Depth – Mitch Cornish, Luke Kelly, Kieran Moss,

Backrower depth – Gower, Peni Terepo, Cody Nelson, Joseph Paulo, Pauli Pauli,

Hooking Depth – Isaac Degois, Kaysa Pritchard, Cameron King

Prop depth – James Hasson, Peni Terepo, David Gower, Rory O'Brien

I think I still feel a bit nervous about outside backs should one go down, and potentially a prop.

Cheers Steve

  • Looking at that list it'll be a very good top 25 with plenty of depth. You forgot to add Rory O'Brien who we picked up from Saints and possibly Tanginoa if he is signed as well (rumoured). Which leads me to say our forward depth will be excellent. Plenty of back up players at Prop, Hooker and 2nd row. Our only concern is in the backs. The starting side will be decent, but Folau, Morgan and Toutai, gee how do you pick one of those, all equally as good/bad on their day. Gutherson also brings versatility, he can play wing and fullback if needed which helps a lot.

    • Hi King! Just updated O'Brien I somehow didn't put him in there. Totally agree re those backs hence my point, they all make me nervous haha.

  • Gday Steve,

I think the beauty of the signings we have made are that if need be Gordon can cover Wing/ Centre and FB which provides us with alot more depth. In Terms of props/ forwards, That is one thing we have in abundance. Gower, Mannah, Paulo, Pauli , Wicks,Hasson, OBrien and Alvaro.

I think the thing we lack that other teams have is Fitness and Mental strength.

  • Looks pretty good to me, enough for firsts and reserves both to have good 2016's..... also think that starting line up is spot on so far, unless of course more signings my only change would be foran for kelly :P
  • with some luck, and with a dedicated strength and conditioning team as well as some new team physios on board, this depth will stay healthy, which will not only translate to players needing to perform on a regular week in week out basis to retain their spot, but it will also result in a strong second tier (Wentworthville) that gets results.

Very exciting times ahead to be a blue and gold fan!

  • i dont rate Buretta - he has a go in offence but his postional play in defence is terrible. Otherwise thats a great squad with plenty of experience.

  • I think Nathan Davis and Lavaka can be added to that list, both are capable of improvement with a good off season. Sandor Earl is another that could be in the squad if things go well. Depth and potential is looking great.

Has it been confirmed that Reece Robinson has left the club, or are we still waiting for him to make up his mind?
  • Looks pretty good/close Steve. I would only add that Faraimo might need to beat out Morgan for the other three-quarter spot though. Morgan's best position is wing and give him space and he can score a try.

    • Morgan is a defensive player and his best position is centre. So if he plays first grade it will be to defend at centre. Otherwise why waste a wing spot? Faraimo is a better winger than Morgan in both attack and defence. So is Gutherson.
  • Sandor Earl and Robinson I left out till we know anymore.
Lavaka and Davis, are the genuine NRL depth as back ups?
