2014 Player Stats

Been doing some soul searching over the weekend about our team and what's going wrong. Also seeing a lot of debate on the site about certain players so I have done some number crunching. I know that stats don't tell you how many times a player bombs a try or even gives a penalty away at a critical stage of a game but there are some quite interesting stats. I worked the stats out in averages to get a real gauge on the players consistency. I will start off with the stats that indicate the good things players do:TOP 5 TACKLES PER GAMEDe Gois - 42.4Peats. - 38.1Jo Paulo- 33.4Ma'u. -26.2Mannah - 24.9TOP 5 LINE BREAKS PER GAMEHayne. -1Hunt. -1Sio. -0.82Toutai. -0.75Radrada -0.71TRY ASSISTS PER GAMEHayne. -0.79Sandow. -0.5Hopoate.-0.46Tonga. -0.31Norman. -0.29TOP 5 METRES PER GAMEHayne. -168mMannah -124.5mRadrada-121.9mToutai. -107mMa'u. -106.2mTOP 5 RUNS PER GAMEHayne. -14.6Mannah. -12.9Radrada -11.9Toutai. -11.9Ma'u. -11.6TOP 5 OFFLOADS PER GAMETonga. -1.06Jnr Paulo -1Pauli. -0.86Hayne. -0.86Morgan. -0.83TOP 10 METRES PER HITUPHunt. -14.6mHayne. -11.5mKelly. -10.3mRadrada. -10.2mMannah. -9.6mMorgan. -9.4mJnr Paulo. -9.4mNorman. -9.3mSio. -9.3mMa'u. -9.1mTOP 5 TACKLES PER MISSED TACKLE (better defenders)Allgood. -47.5Edwards. -22.7Mannah. -22Jnr Paulo. -19.7Terepo. -18.1Now onto the more negative stats:TOP 5 MISSED TACKLES PER GAMESandow. -5.36Peats. -3.9De Gois. -3.6Hopoate. -3Hunt. -3TOP 5 PENALTIES CONCEDED PER GAMEGower. -0.93Norman. -0.82Edwards. -0.75Smith. -0.75Hayne. -0.64TOP 5 ERRORS PER GAMEHayne. -1.5Morgan. -1.3Sandow. -1.21Toutai. -1.13Kelly. -0.86TOP 5 MISSED TACKLES PER TACKLES MADE (worse defenders)Hunt. -1.3Sandow. -2.5Radrada. -2.9Hayne. -3.4Hopoate. -4.4In my opinion these stats single out a few players who simply aren't performing. I don't think Sandows stats especially the 1 try assist every 2 matches justifies his spot in the side. For a player that plays the style he plays you would expect more try assists plus his last tackle kicking game is weak in a side that is struggling to get any territorial gain.Joseph Paulos presence in the side is also questionable with his role to be a ball playing back rower. He has accumulated a mediocre 2 try assists this season and doesn't rank near our top off loaders. His defensive workload in the side is pleasing though.Norman also doesn't justify his position in the side only averaging a try assist every 3 to 4 games. Our first choice centres (Tonga and Hopoate) have better try assists stats than Norman. His kicking game is also very inconsistent.Judging on the missed tackles per tackles made, Allgood is by far our best defender, also pleasing to see the effort Mannah and Ma'u have consistently put in throughout the season as well as Haynes attacking stats. No surprise to see Mannah and Jnr Paulo our strongest ball runners in the forwards. Special mention to De Gois for tackling his arse off like Peats did earlier in the season.

  • Interesting. When I think of Sandow, I think more of line breaks, especially receiving the ball from offloading forwards.

  • Sandow's kicking for field position is great, but both him and Paranorman have no idea when it comes to trying to set up a try or get a repeat set. I don't even remember the last time we forced a line dropout, then again, I don't even remember this afternoon...
  • I think these stats are rubbish when looked at as pure stats. Whay they show is a glaring issue with our attack. We have 3 attacking options in Hayne, Sandow and Norman. BA big failure this year is that he isn't playing to each of their strengths. I cant see how and what the attacking options are eack week and our 3 attacking players seem more and more lost each week.

Pezet is still in his infancy. He's just a stop gap fill in here so it doesn't matter too much what he looks like.Remember this Parra is doing him a favour not the other way…"
