11 clubs over the cap

According to KentAN ASTONISHING 11 NRL clubs could be forced to shed players to be salary cap compliant ahead of the 2018 season.NRL 360 co-host Paul Kent revealed the stunning figure on Fox League on Wednesday night. The revelation comes after it was revealed by Fairfax Media Aaron Woods could remain at Wests Tigers if salary cap drama at Canterbury forces a contract backflip. The competition’s salary cap beyond 2017 is yet to be agreed upon as negotiations between the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association continue. The big implication of the prolonged discussions is some NRL clubs have been planning towards an approximated 2018 salary cap of $10 million, whereas it’s likely to be almost $1 million less than that.It means those clubs may need to cull players from their roster to ensure they are compliant before next season kicks off.“My understanding is there’s somewhere in the vicinity of 11 clubs who are over, and they’re working to get back under,” Kent said.Bulldogs players look on during a loss.Bulldogs players look on during a loss.Source: News Corp Australia“The NRL, what they’ve done is put out a figure some time ago of about 9.1 (million) that clubs have to work towards.“Clubs are now working towards that because some clubs had budgeted on a $10 million salary cap, so they’re now working towards that.“There’s a lot of cattle trading going on at the moment, a lot of discussions between managers and clubs and trying to move this guy on, players are being shopped around for no other reason than clubs are trying to take money out of their cap.”Kent confirmed the Bulldogs are one of the clubs who may need to shed players from the 2018 roster. But he explained it wouldn’t necessarily come at the cost of big-name recruits Woods or Kieran Foran.“Canterbury are over, and Canterbury are shopping around some of their players, they are trying to move players on because they need to find room to bring Woods and Foran into the team,” Kent said.“The NRL will give them to a certain point in time, it will be sometime later next year, where they have to be cap compliant. The Dogs will work to be under that cap.“If it gets to it and the players have been unable to be moved on — this is just a theory — the NRL won’t register Kieran Foran or Aaron Woods or possibly both.“It won’t be last in first out, it will be up to the Bulldogs to decide on who they want to keep.”https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/media-watch-mixed-news-for-st-george-illawarra-dragons-players-as-one-world-cup-dream-trashed/news-story/3a7a293947287e3268680ddb437c1005

  • Let's hope the Riff are 3 or 4 hundred over also so they can offload Latu, we might get him for a song...
  • Actually 11 clubs is bad news for us, thats enough for the NRL to take the weak option and have an amnesty for next season. and then in 2019 have a set amount for the clubs to work for.  And us doing the right thing to get screwed over again.

    • Players will just sign a new lower paid contract and the difference will magically come from TPAs
  • Kents spin on that is that those clubs were being proactive and are now going to be punished, of course his mates raiders are in the same boat. Seriously I cant believe some of the crap that comes out of this guy!
  • Just a guess but nrl owned teams such as knights and Titans and tigers would be compliant. That leaves 2 more, can assume Parra due to cap issue and increased scrutiny and 1 other club, possibly saints who owe nrl money and couldn't have spent up big.
I find the number 11 a bit exaggerated however clubs only have themselves to blame.

You can't spend money you haven't been told you will have so can't see how nrl can be held responsible.

This is disaster for the game though which could see players and clubs lodging lawsuits, and will be players that lose in long run. Clubs will argue they couldn't honour player contract due to nrl but nrl are clear of responsibility as they never told club to spend more then current cap. Will be dragged tough court before player gets paid. Some clubs already struggling pay wages on time.

1 option is Clubs may have pay out contracts for players not playing for them which nrl will then have to exempt from the cap or take from following years cap making it a 2 year cap period.
Either way clubs who abided by rules in place will be punished due to mob mentality - if lots of clubs spent more then cap nrl will have raise it.
Nrl should have put stop to clubs signing players as soon as value of contracts exceeded cap with threat of huge fines on top of losing players or points.
Bad administration from nrl to allow situation and worse administration by clubs spending over non existent budget.
    • The players aren't completely innocent in this it was in part due to the talks between the nrl and the players association that caused the delays in announcing the 2018 salary cap.

It was pretty much a major screw-up from everyone involved.
  • Well, at least we know we're not one of them!

  • Fek em all. Let them squirm.
  • So will these teams loose points ? This salary cap doesnt work .and to go further lets just throw out salary cap and the rich clubs will survive and struggling clubs will die
  • Surely the Roosters, Raidets, Broncos, Storm & Panthers are in this 11. And why are they still active in the market. I think we should wait till after the Grandfinal because I think a few good players will be a available.

"I'm not suggesting throwing Lorenzo or any other young player in there now, they aren't ready, my point is they still won't be ready for a start in 2027 either so are we going to sign another 1 year stop gap 6 for 2027?."
