NRL 2020: Canterbury Bulldogs confirm signing of Panthers young gun Jack Hetherington on two-year deal WRITTEN BY NATHAN WILLIAMSON @NathW1997 #Jack Hetherington LEAGUE CANTERBURY-BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS LEAGUE The Canterbury Bulldogs have confirmed the signing of Panthers young forward Jack Hetherington on a two-year deal. Hetherington made his debut for the Panthers in 2018, playing 17 games for the club. He would make a major impression during the 2020 season, becoming a shining light for the Warriors during his brief loan stint at the club. Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill was pleased to have secured his signature, ensuring that he continues his development under new coach and Panthers assistant Trent Barrett. "Having someone of Jack's ability want to be part of what we are building at Belmore is fantastic news for our Members and fans," Hill said in a statement. "Jack is a quality young player who will add a great deal of starch to our forward pack and we believe that he will continue to develop under Head Coach Trent Barrett, who he has worked with in recent seasons. "We are continuing to build out the depth in our squad and we believe that Jack will be a real compliment to the group of forwards that we have." MORE: Pearce linked with shock Roosters return The Panthers confirmed that they had released the 24-year-old from the rest of his contract, thanking him for his services to the club. Jack has been offered a significant opportunity at another NRL club and we believe he’s earned the right to pursue that opportunity," Panthers General Manager Rugby League Matt Cameron said in a statement. "Given the limited game time we’ve been able to offer him at Panthers, the decision to grant him an early release is the right one for everyone involved. "We thank Jack for his service to our club and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours." It continues the major roster transformation that incoming Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett has undergone since his appointment, having already secured Nick Cotric , Corey Waddell and Luke Thompson earlier in the year. However, Hetherington arrives at a club with a growing rap sheet at the judiciary, most notably receiving a four-week ban for his ugly tackle on Sea Eagles prop Martin Taupau that left him concussed.

  • Yep, just read this.  He is exaclty the kind of player we need.  Please tell me we at least had a crack at him.

    • Too expensive mate

Weve only pay to keep unwanted plodders and drifters  Anyone that can actually play and make an immediate impact we look fir reasons as to why we shouldn't Blay them.

  • Pretty sure Barett would of had him locked in months ago when he got the job.

Apparently south's might offload Ethan Lowe due to the emergence of Bayley Sironan. Origin player last year premiership winner if he is available I'd look hard at him

    • Offside, problem with him is, that he is injury prone. I thought I heard or read somewhere he may have to retire due to his neck injury

      • I thought it was an ACL injury I maybe wrong

  • Lol can't have them all , he wouldn't sign with us, he's been coached by Barrett and panthers and would of made his decision based on Barrett now going to the bulldogs. Go look at the other 15 clubs forums and see if they have some dude like you crying over every other clubs signings ?

  • We need to start signing players, otherwise we will be left with old useless players, that nobody wants.

  • Exactly

  • We have to be strategic not just jump at names that appear on the market.

We also have to be savvy with how much we pay.

Moves grabbing Blake and RCG from Penrith for basically heavily discounted rates are smart buys.

I'd be going back to the Penrith tree and trying to snag a guy like Dean Whare he's an under the radar centre.and thee only thing I'm doing due diligence on is injury. If Jennings is history he's a very experienced attack and defensive centre I'd be looking at.

With thee emergence of guys like Naiden and Crichton needing to be resigned maybe the mentioned may become available.

    • I agree with you about Dean Whare, Coryn. I posted suggesting it a week or two ago  or thought I did, but I looked later to see if there was any response and couldn't find it. Maybe I forgot to hit comment and left the site. Old age fukcs with you in many ways.

Whare turns 31 in January which is not old for a centre and hits like a sledge hammer in defence and is a former NZ test player. He probably has had a few injuries but I haven't heard of anything chronic. With Penrith's abundance of riches in the three quarters he is only likely to be an option in their top side because of injury and he might be looking to move on.

I don't mind the philosophy our administration has in regard to player recruitment. It may be conservative but we have got into trouble in the past going too far the other way so as long as we stay around the top 4 for the next season or two by making a few astute buys each season I'll be happy. We'll see out BA if he has no finals success and Moses too if he doesn't take the steps necessary to become a great halfback. Punting them now without viable replacements would be too costly and those replacements unattainable anyway.

So I think Whare a good option for 2 or 3 seasons for a start.

"Of I was the bush coach,  I'd give him two weeks off, that at least will give him a chance to be right when Moses returns and we can make a run.  If he's farked at 70% we're wasting out time trying to make the 8"
