When Gooraz met Kenny.

Well...here is how it all began. The year was 1991 and Gooraz and I had been 'going out' with each other for about 7 months and when the pre-season trial between Parramatta and North Sydney Bears was to be held in our local town, Nowra we were excited.

So, up we rocked, goon in hand and after sneaking past the gate collectors we found a perfect spot to watch the game.It was right on the sideline about a metre away from the field...ahhhh, those were the days. We managed to down way too much alcohol while watching a terrible performance from Parramatta, who went down to the Bears 54-12.

After the game, we staggered over to the sheds to see if Gooraz could meet some of the players.I sat down and waited while witnessing Gooraz somehow schmooze his way into the sheds, after appointing himself the guardian of the players, by keeping the louts and kids away from them while they cleaned themselves up and dressed.

He loved every minute of sitting in the sheds, soaking up the atmosphere and listening to the team banter and after what seemed like an eternity, he finally came out to collect his girlfriend, who was enduring the crude and lewd comments from the lower grade team.

The team all went out for a presentation and somehow I lost track of where Gooraz was for a second.I glanced over and noticed Brett Kenny and Tony Rea standing with a shield while the local newspaper took some photos. To my utter shock and horror, I saw Gooraz walking towards the set up, wanting to talk to his favourite player, not realising in his drunken stupor that they were taking photos.

I eventually managed to get his attention and he got out of the way. They continued to take photos, so I thought all was well. That was until we got the paper a few days later and turned to the back page to find the following picture (sorry about the quality...unfortunately it has been somewhat damaged over the years. Also, take note of the zipper).

What a great memory!

"He went to the Dragons ffs. They've made the finals once in ten years. That means every club in the game 'had the ability to get him'. They just needed to offer the most money. If we had offered the most we would've got him for sure."

"No it's because we're not a strong club. We've had a revolving door of board members, CEOs, general managers and coaches since 1986 and won nothing. 'Accepting mediocrity' hasn't been the problem. Market forces are what's held us back."
