My thoughts on last night....

Let me just say that last night was probably a low point in my life.

Most of what I saw last night was just wrong. You wonder how can they not learn. How can this still be happening? And then you just try and block it out of your mind, and pretend that it never happened.

I'll admit there were some positives. At one point I even got to my feet, and joined the chorus of screaming fans.

But then you'd see one of those horrible, unforgivable mistakes and you'd get slapped back into reality and wonder if you're actually going to make it out with your sanity in-check.

So where do we start. Ageing 40 year old plus males should no longer be dressing in tight, leather pants, thrusting their pelvises around and dancing to horrible, cliche'd choreography. Yes, if you thought watching Parramatta lose again was a tough time, then try sitting through not one, but two nineties boy bands running through songs that you hated 20 years ago and which certainly have got no better with time.

Yesterday, I made the ultimate sacrifice. My missus was a huge New Kids on the Block Fan as a young teen and so when I found out they were coming to Australia, I went out and bought her tickets. And I did the chivalrous thing of accompanying her. I even went ahead with the idea, when I found out it was going to be a dual concert with Backstreet Boys. How bad it can be. I'll boogie with the missus for a few of the old NKOTB hits and then we'll quietly slip out for BSB.

Then comes the ultimate kick in the guts as I find out that not only would I be putting my ears through some serious damage, but that it would be clashing with this week's Eels games. Arrrrgghhhh. I considered what excuses I could concoct to get myself out of it, but in the end I chose to do the right thing by the missus and see it through.

I found out just before we headed in, than it was not going to be one band then the other and so I was going to have sit through the whole two hours plus marathon. Yes, tag-teaming 90's boy bands really is as bad as you might imagine.

The positives. Well, I estimate the female to male ratio was about 30 to one, including a former Miss Australia who was like three rows in front of me. And I think I've earned enough brownie points to get me through the rest of the NRL season. But next time you think of the Eels and think how bad can life be, let me tell you, until you've been to hell and back like I did last night, you've got nothing.

P.S. I still haven't see the game and patiently waiting it for appear on NRL.com videos!

  • That is cruel & unusual punishment. Way beyond the call of duty, surely your Mrs has girlfriends, you should've shouted them a hotel room to get ready in, then the concert and then back to the hotel to retire and home on Sunday. Meanwhile you get pizza and beer, mind the kids while suffering another form of cruel & unusual punishment, watching our team play the last 20 minutes with a football IQ in the same vicinity as room temperature.

  • Yeh, I was going to attempt it but the brain tonight just wasn't up to the series of analogies it was going to require.

  • Oh yeah Phil, I'm over 40 and wear black leather pants! look good in them as well! :)

  • I was certainly Hanging Tough and taking it Step-by-Step. (This has to stop before it gets ugly. I was made to realise that almost every single New Kids song outside of those three I knew has the word 'girl' in the song title).

  • Sad thing is, I bet they performed with more structure on stage than the eels did on the field.
  • on page 20 of the tele today, there is a great picture of the boys on stage, and if you look hard you can see Phil, all dressed up in hes leathers, its a great pick, check it out !!!!
