Misfiring Eels promise forensic review

Parramatta have promised to undertake a top-to-toe review after their NRL season hit rock bottom in Saturday's "embarrassing" thumping at the hands of Newcastle.

Eels CEO Bernie Gurr on Sunday reiterated his support for coach Brad Arthur following a surge of anger amongst the blue and gold faithful following their fifth loss in a row and their 11th of the season.

In a wide-ranging interview, Gurr said that they would conduct a forensic examination of the club, vowed to give Arthur and his foootball department all the support they needed and told disaffected fans he understood their frustrations.

As well, Tepai Moeroa is facing three to five weeks on the sidelines after being cited for a grade three shoulder charge on Knights forward Chris Heighington.

"We're trying to look at it professionally and clinically and doing a forensic examination of all those different pieces because the last thing you want to do is look at it emotionally," Gurr told AAP.

"It's going to take a bit of time to do that. One of the things we're really looking at is our recruitment and retention - we have to make sure we get that right.

"We need to make sure the support around the football club is as strong as it wants to be, we're supporting Brad and the coaching staff."

The Eels recently appointed former New Zealand coach David Kidwell as an assistant and brought in former NRL referee Sean Hampstead as an adviser to address their poor discipline.

Asked about the sections of the Eels fanbase calling for Arthur's head, Gurr said: "We're supportive of Brad. Brad's proven he's a good coach, he went 16-8 last year and those same fans were lauding his coaching abilities.

"He hasn't become a worse coach in nine months."

Which begs the question: What has gone wrong with a side that pushed Melbourne in the first week of the finals last year?

"Part of it is we seem to have lost confidence. The confidence is driven by a lack of cohesion, particularly in attack.

"We've been hit with a lot of injuries, there's no doubt about it. That's not an excuse, that's just a legitimate reason."

  • I have changed my mind on this - FARKING SACK BERNIE FIRST, useless kent.

    • Poor Bernie has no idea , the man had been a utter failure .

From our sponsorship to the culture of the club Bernie has failed , he has achieved nothing as a Footy CEO and made his name with James Packer and Nick Politis holding his back and handing everything to him on his lap , people should be asking Bernie why he has not revealed  what the major sponsorship deal is worth considering he said on a number of occasions that he would not sell it cheaply.

I actually applaud this Eagelston guy and the people putting up the money to get rid of Max Donnelly and he needs to be fucked off ASAP , Max and Bernie have done so many about faces it's not funny , between these two fools they came up with the brilliant idea of not hiring a footy manager and just for that they both should be gone .

Bernie to say BA is a good coach is a fucking joke and he has no idea about eels fans when they are pissed off and he obviously has no idea about the Factions Dennis Fitzgerald will have a field day with this fool in the coming weeks .

Eels fans should be baying for blood and it urge all eels fans to make their voices heard and give the the dopes that are running the club absolute hell as we need them gone .

      • And who could care less what Denis Fitzgerald has to say - NO ONE except Denis.

      • Does Parra need Fitzy back in charge?

it is a serious question, at least in the 30 years he ran the club everyone knew he was the Boss.

since he got kicked out the board has change virtually every election, the club has leaked more that the Titanic and their has been an endless procession of CEO's each seemingly more incompetent than the one who they replaced.

and I'm not denying that Dennis may well be responsible for a lot of the shit slinging that has occurred since 2009 but even if that is the case at least we know once he is back that any shit he has left won't be slung

  • Really ?? Then I wonder why so many club sponsors ,members and Fans are saying that since Dennis Fitzgerald has been gone the club has never recovered ? 3 different boards and they have done nothing but sink the club , Dennis has been the only dope who was able to run the club .

    • So many fans????  Must be those that are trying to just have the spread of hot air around.

    • Fong have you forgotten the decline of the eels in the 90s.  Who was in charge during that time. There has been less years without Fitzgerald then with him in charge during our premiership drought.

I don't doubt he did lot of good things but there was also a lot of bad things as well.  Also with so many rules and regulations in place as well as increased scrutiny by media a figure such as him wouldn't be so good.

As for trouble with club and board turnover since he left he has been front and centre causing issues and trying to disrupt the club since he was booted.  The factions are a result of trouble caused by him and factions are what saw previous imbeciles win spots of authority in the club.

He has continually undermined the club, disregarded and disrespected previous players and that is part of the core problem of parra.

All clubs have history that players can buy into.  All our ex players want to do is gain control of the club or destroy it if they fail.  What do coaches and players joining parra have in way of history or culture to buy into.  Yes Brian Smith had some success making finals (with no premiership) but it masked bigger issues that go back to Fitzgerald.  Current players can't talk to some ex players in case they piss off current or future board members.  When is last time all our ex players attended function such as old boys day.  Our club is fractured and has been long before Fitzgerald lost control. The continual turnover of coaches and boards yet similar results.  Even when small patches of form appear it disappears even quicker.  As for so many fans that is something that is debatable.  Yeah some groups of fans or club board aspirants make a lot of noise but that doesn't reflect the greater fan base of the eels.

      • Fake Midget no one is saying Fitzy  was without fault because he had a lot  but the facts are that he built the club on his own .

When he became our secretary Parra didn't have a pot to piss in and he had a useless board which offered him zero help or assistance ,.it was Fitzgerald who built the leagues club and it was Dennis who within 4 years  turned it into a leagues club with the 2nd highest turnover behind Easts leagues club .

Dennis left the club with $67m in assets and everything good that ever happened to Parra happened under Dennis Fitzgerald's watch and that can't be disputed , we were the  most professionally run club in the game under Dennis and we were a very disciplined club and players rarely fucked up off the field under his watch .

Then their is the bad like when he wanted to merge with the tigers which was totally unforgivable and their are a few more thinhg he did which were unforgivable .  The Spagnolo board didn't fuck up because Fitzgerald interfered they fucked up because they were inept and stupid , The Sharp board didn't fuck up because Fitzgerald interfered they fucked up because they were crooked bums who had Zero idea and the current administration has not had the club hit rock bottom because Fitzgerald interfered it's because they are not good enough to do the job .

Like i said, all that the last 10  years had has shown is that the club  has fallen apart since Fitzy has been gone snd the facts show it .

  • I also doubt that the salary cap cheating would have come out if Fitzy wasn't evicted.

The Roosters are in all likelihood cheating the cap but all of the under the table sponsors etc know that they don't want to piss off Nick Politis.

The NRL has NEVER!!!!! uncovered a cap cheater by themselves in each of the major cases (Dogs, Storm and Eels) it has taken someone to release the information, even when the NRL gets a sniff like the Cowboys property scam or the Broncos issues it is swept under the rug by the club having someone take the fall in the Broncos case it was Andrew Gee and none of the real paperwork is seen and the NRL integrity committee is to weak to be able to follow through.

Get a pissed off ex-employee or sponsor and you have a Melbourne, Canterbury or Parramatta scenario

Parra had that fear with Fitzgerald in charge.

  • So he doesn't become a worse coach in 9 months and says confidence is the problem driven by lack of cohesion particularly in attack. Who says he we play in attack Gurr? who hasn't changed the structure of play after 11 losses Gurr? The bloke who isn't worse after 9 months that's who, he's the problem as much as I don't want to say, the players aren't playing for him, they have no confidence in him.

its not that he can't coach, but has gone stale and either becomes less stubborn or pisses off.
