The EPL Blog

Thought I'd throw this up given we are now past the halfway point of this 2018/19 EPL season.

So far it's been a fantastic season for the boys from the red side of Merseyside. Liverpool have been an unbeatable juggernaut so far this season. After 20 matches they have 17 wins and three draws. As a Liverpool fan it's been a wild ride so far. But, as Jurgen Klopp says, there are still 18 games to go, we've only done half the job, we can celebrate when we have won the League.

United had a shocking start to the season with the Special One in Jose Mourinho being sacked before the midway point.

Arsenal have had a good bounce back under new manager Unai Emery following the departure of long term mentor Arsene Wenger at the end of last season.

Manchester City remain one of the forces in the league despite a couple of recent losses. They have scored the most goals of any side this season and will continue to challenge Liverpool as the season goes on. Speaking of which, the two sides clash on Friday morning with managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola continuing their rivalry that was borne during their Bundesliga days.

Tottenham are still putting pressure on at the top of the table. Their only concern being the persistent rumour that Manchester United are sounding out manager Mauricio Pochettino to move from North London to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile at the bottom of the table, long term Premier League club, Southampton is sitting around the relegation zone and are in danger of dropping down for the first time since 2012. Aaron Mooy's Huddersfield also faces relegation just over a season following their promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history while Fulham face relegation after only just returning to the EPL.

  • I'm looking forward to Man City putting Liverpool in their place tomorrow.

    • I heard the same when we played Chelsea earlier this year, then Arsenal. There's an assuredness in this Liverpool side. I'm really looking forward to the tactical battle.

I imagine Pep will look to try and dominate the middle. Flood it with bodies to prevent Liverpool's press. I see Klopp playing Henderson, Fabinho and Shaqiri in midfield. Fabinho to play just in front of the back 4 while Hendo harries and rushes City through the middle with Shaqiri providing an extra attacking threat up the pitch.

The issue for City is the fitness of Fernandinho and KDB. The Brazilian is only just back from injury while KDB will be undergoing a late fitness test and it will be a brave manager who throws him in against this Liverpool side.

      • My deep analysis is Liverpool's had so much luck this year, it eventually has to run out and tomorrow is as good a time as any.

        • Even a loss gives us a 6 point gap. And luck? Ahhh you must mean the injuries to Wijnaldum, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ings and Lallana leading into the final 2 months of last season that meant we had only 13 fit players to choose from across 2 competitions.

Liverpool is back as a force Phil, just accept it.

Luck has nothing really to do with our season. You don't go 20 games unbeaten on luck. You don't concede just 8 goals due to luck.

See Phil, we're just back where we belong. That's all. But Tottenham. Tottenham are pretenders and have been since 1961. Bob Paisley won more League titles in 9 years as manager of Liverpool than Tottenham has in 136 years.

          • 1990 must seem a long time for you ?

            • Just like 1986 for us eels supporters

          • I have been involved in soccer for over 40 years as a player, coaching at elite level as well as training coaches. I agree Sir there is no luck in going 20 unbeaten. Yes we were beaten tonight but we go again. All you analysists out there need to actually be physically involved in the game and see what it takes. I took my sons team to win the COC only losing one game all year. I had a lot of doubters about me. But guess what I prooved the effers wrong

  • Fecked

  • Suck it Liverpool!

    • You're celebrating dropping to third? Shows you where Spurs priorities lie.

We're still top of the league. No top 6 games for nearly two months.

"How? The kid has never played 6 other than Tonga U18's. Pretty much every good Fullback has skills that can translate to 6, Tedesco looks like it, Pap has those elements too. If you have a good pass on you and can run those are skills needed for a…"

"As much as I would love to see Cobbo at Parra, I wouldn't be moving Iongi from the fullback role to accommodate him.
Also, if we can get Galvin from next year, I can't see any reason why we wouldn't regardless of who his manager is.
I see a…"

"I'd be sticking with Iongi at FB and Galvin for 5/8. We all know his manager is ruthless, and it's clearly just a ploy to get him it of his final contract year.
I'd have Cobbo on the wing, but I prefer Iongi at FB because of his ball playing ability."

"Exactly. Let the kid figure out NRL first and become a seasoned first grader. Why complicate it further just to try and strengthen a position that is quite frankly the least of our worries. A fullback is more important than a Five-Eighth.

"I'll say no to Iongi going to 5/8.  He's a fullback and if you're going to put him in the front line, it's going to take a lot of work to change his body shape for the extra defensive work.  That's a major commitment to turn him into a 6.   He's too…"

"Really? As Jye Gray has the best average being 198 metres. Iongi ranks 25th for average in the NRL with a few of those 25 playing less than 2 games so the average can be way higher.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO GALVIN

I'm not a huge fan of Galvin primarily because I think he has big ego and because who his manager is , having your halves both managed by Isaac Moses is a recipe for future disaster and we simply don't have the management who could handle Isaac if…
