Family Superstitions.

My Mum had a few superstitions that she made us kids well aware of as we grew up. The regular ones- never put new shoes on the table,it's bad luck. More ones were- never open an umbrella inside the house. Never cross knives,it means an argument. If you drop a knife on the floor, don't pick it up,get someone else to do it,then tell them that they'll get a nice surprise on a particular day of the week, that you nominate. Same goes for scissors. If you were given knives,as a gift, you had to give the giver a few pennies. Of course, these days, pennies are long gone so if you're presented with knives,as a gift,I don't know what you do in that case. There are probably a few that I've forgotten over the years. Do any fellow Eelers have family superstitions that they'd like to share?

  • My elder sister used to dash about the house covering all the mirrors with  towels when there was a thunderstorm brewing. She said it would stop ball lightning reflecting off the mirrors and blowing up the house! The house never did blow up!

  • Spill salt throw a pinch over your left shoulder - not too sure why, but it had to be your left shoulder.

Don't walk under ladders = bad luck

Black cat crosses your path = bad luck

When talking about possible bad circumstances, knock on wood.

Always wear clean underwear in case you got hit by a bus. It was always a bus that was going to hit you, not a car or truck.

If giving (or receiving) a wallet or purse always put money in it for the future fortune of the recipient.

Forgotten more than I can remember.

  • Always have a pre game before heading to the game. It renders the mind cleared and focused.

    • This is a great idea because no one has a chance of getting a beer out of you at the game :)

      • LOL!! Mate, I have my ticket and I'm ready to go. You will definitely be buying me a beer this year ;).

        "Gate B, Aisle 214, Row 18, Seat 10"

I'll be calling out your name as soon as I round that turn to head up the stairs! See you soon champion  :)

"I'll be surprised if Teancum Brown ends up as good as Tuivaiti. Brown might be bigger and fitter, but he is already a year older and shown less on the field. Tuivaiti has elite power and footwork for a junior middle."

"We have 3 quality young props training in the FG preseason. Prefer to keep them then pay big money to an outsider. We dont have a great history with high paid signings. Need to spend the money on some quality backs."

"JDB only signed for a year. The second year is a club option, so if we get Koloamatangi we likely won't extend JDB. In a similar way, JAC's CO was probably contingent on Drown not activating his PO."

"Yeah seems to be a bit of an odd signing in hindsight. We signed him before Hopgood moved to Prop i believe and that was a relevalation. I feel we have a few experienced forwards, Paulo, Walker, Williams, even Hopgood is getting there now.
