Apple Mac help

Here's my predicament .

I have an Apple Mac and I'm not a Mac man .  I am in the hospital for a week . I wanna watch NETFLIX on my Mac as the Foxtel and FTA tv bores the shit out of me .  Wollongong Private I've just realised only gives you 10GB allowance per day and there's no option to buy more wifi .  My IPhone for some reason will show as connected via hotspot but when I go to open the browser on the Mac it's saying no internet connection . It's pissing me off . The hospital does have a guest sign on with a 500mg limit but with the MAC now it seems it's registered me as a patient so I can't seem to re register as a guest .

Questions

1) Are my options to get around the 10GB limit are non existent ?

2) is there a way on the MAC to hide or change the Macs manufactures adress as im guessing that's how it's being recognised hence not being able to simply forget the wifi connection and re register as a guest ?

3) VPN won't help ?

4) any pointers as to why my hotspots showing on the Mac as connected ( phone has full service ) but not being able to search the web ?

thanks Nerds

  • Wiz hey mate, im not to sure about the Netflix, but i hope you're doing ok health wise. I was in hospital for a day with my hand recently and i know how boring it is, especially if there's not too many hot nurses around lol & i understand free to air tv is 99% bs these days......Wishing you the best and home asap. take care Wizard. Chief..

Ps. If there's any hot nurses Wishing to post a selfie, pls post it on here. gl with everything legend..

    • Good to see you back, Chief. Hope your hand is doing better now, and you're well. Apparently, your uncle was here while you were away.

    • Thanks Cheify , there's actually a few crackers in here . Only said to the old man yesterday that whoever the doc is doing the hiring here has a good eye . Been in here 5 times now so I get along with a few pretty well lol .

  • Wiz sorry to hear about your stay and I hope you're well. I'm not much of a Mac or computer guy myself, either. Super might be able to help out. But, I'll have a shot:

    1. Doubt it.
    2. Not sure, but I highly doubt it.
    3. I don't think VPN will make a difference. It's usually to do with overcoming geo-location blockages - country to country, not within a country - and it slows your connection unless you have a damn good one and paying for it. Good for changing IP addresses, too,(so if you're being blocked from somewhere due to your IP maybe lol). If you're being hacked into, you're goneski. Forget it. You won't be able to hide your Mac address or anything, you're doing, anywhere, at anytime. Put sticky tape over your phone cameras and a blanket over your TV and wear some underwear for God's sake, lol.
    4. On your mobile phone, do you have your "wi-fi turned on" on your phone? If so, turn off your wifi on your mobile. You gotta turn on your "data on" only for a hotspot connection. Something that occasionally gets overlooked. A simple thing.
    • Thanks bud , I'll have a crack at this today and make sure I've got all the settings kosher

  • Get someone to take the Mac home and download the Netflix shows/movies over your home network for you. 1gb = 4 hours of watch time on Netflix.

  • Yeh, basically you won't be able to get around that. In saying that 10GB will get you about 10 hours of Netflix in SD.

VPNs only work once you're connected to the web, they're not going to trick the network into thinking you're a new connection. I'm not sure how they're doing the connection in hospital. Are they asking you to sign in with a unique login? Or can basically anyone get in?

And like HOE said. Your phone can't hotspot a WiFi connection, it can only hotspot data. So if you've got a good phone plan with a bunch of data, you could just connect the Mac to the WiFi, use up your daily allowance, then turn your phone data on and hotspot to the Mac.

    • My phones actually a bottomless data plan but for some reason it won't work on the Mac . My PC is actually a surface pro and it has zero issues with hot spotting as much data and Netflix as you can use , but as it's a work one I ditched it and brought the mrs's Mac in. If I brought the work one in I'd be tempted to do work shit . But the Mac which I rarely use will show as connected to my phones hotspot will say " no internet connection as soon as I open the browser . Simply it seems I'm fucked and may need to send the wife to get me a dongle with a plan today lol .

      thanks anyway bud .

oh and Netflix site doesn't seem to have an option to change the playback to a lower definition .
