As promised, Dad, I watched the Eels game last night. Bloody wish I hadn't now!! There were more gaps in their line than a smile in England! I could hear you swearing at the screen from the great beyond. All I can say is I'm glad I was playing our new game. The Gutherson Guzzle. There's only 1 rule to the Gutherson Guzzle. Everytime they say his name, or show his face, you take a drink. I may have been too far gone to watch the second half *HICCUP*.

So it turns out that this little blog site you used mess about on kinda thinks you're a big deal. I mean, WE always knew you were, but it took us by suprise nonetheless. Those damn winds keep blowing everytime we read the beautiful messages left here for you, and making our eyes water!! Bloody allergies. And I think that little table you wanted at the party for your beloved Eels is going to be a sight to behold!. And cop a load of the banner up the top. I guess you were never going to just fade away. I can see you grinning like a cheshire at the thought. With all this support, you don't have to worry about your girls. You've left us plenty of back up!

I know there's plenty I could say about the man you were, your strength, tenacity, humour and generosity. But you pretty much summed it all up with your 3 rules:

Rule 1: Have fun

Rule 2: Get up to mischief

Rule 3: Don't get arrested
9003599869?profile=RESIZE_710xSo you leave us with a reminder that Life is for living and to always be ready to lend a hand up. I'll do my best to make sure the FIG JAM doesn't fall far from the tree.

  • What a wonderful post. You guys are quite obviously a wonderful family and you quite obviously have very good footy IQ. I hope things over the next few weeks settle a bit for you. Why not continue to post on here going forward? You appear to have the same sense of humour as your Dad. As Gibson said, "we may have been behind on the scoreboard when the siren went but we were never beaten"

  • well said Mushroomlet

  • From the bottom of my heart thank you for posting this, Sir Col's beautiful daughter.

It's one of the most heart touching blogs I've come across and the second time I've got emotional and welled up in a while now. The first was when I heard the news.

That's the mantra we all should live by: "Beaten but never defeated".

If the Eels had half the spirit your Dad had they'd be sitting up there with the Panthers.

    Thank you very much.

PS: Deep condolences to you and the family. I hope you keep posting here, too.

  • Daughter of the Sir makes you royalty around here :)

    love the drinking game

Great post x and hugs to you and your family.

  • Great to see your post.  Also great to see that Col has raised a strong and wonderful family.  So sorry for your loss ( and ours).  Please check Cols phone when you have the time to do so.  He was a wonderful man and will be sorely missed.

  • What a beautiful post & photo little mushroom. Sorry for your loss.

Sir Col was much reveered on 1EE and given this is a Football site, I'm pretty sure Gerry Fuller (LOL) is cursing BA for not dropping Waqa against Souths.....

    Rest in peace Sir Col

  • Sir col lives on through you, damn those allergies must be contagious,  someone pass the tissues.

    • How lucky you are to have had such a wonderful dad xxx

  • Condolences Miss Mushroom, may Eels games bring back lots of memories of your dad, through out the years to come.

"Two caveats. 1) Casey McClean is a talent (selected for Kiwis) but played played half a season in Cup and first dozen (?) games at wing in FG, so he is not a good metric for assessing 6/7 into FG? 2) Everyone hopes the Eels can birth their next 5/8…"

"Good question, Randy. I suppose it's to do with an outdated notion of not giving up on your own when they hit rock bottom. We celebrated him when he was flying high. Should we discard him as a useless non-PC leper? Not our problem."
