Your Thoughts on the Future of the Site?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This site has never been the most endearing to the club or even parts of our own fanbase. A common piece of feedback I receive privately is that some find it too negative or drama-filled, which is why many choose to stay away. At times we clash hard and put each other down, the club, the players, and even Super, who pays for this site out of his own pocket. Some of this could understandably offend players’ families. In conversations I’ve had with people within the club’s hierarchy, the club takes a fairly open-minded view and accepts that it can’t control what others say or think. That’s a mature approach.

That said, I believe the majority of us are good eggs, mean well, even if some are rough around the edges and a small minority hold more extreme views. Over the past decade, I’ve met many wonderful people through this site, some of whom I now count as close friends and have learned a great deal from. You’re a big reason I’m still here and why I care about this community.

If you’re willing, I’d appreciate your thoughts on the direction the site should take. Ultimately, Super will decide, but it’s helpful to understand how people feel, here or privately, on:

  • Current affairs and political blogs: Even if personally enjoy them, these often become the most feral and attract extremist views, especially in challenging times. They can flood the site and turn off many who simply want to talk footy, the one thing we all share. Life has enough dramas.

  • Moving these blogs to The Cave: Making them members-only may be a win-win, it allows discussions without overwhelming those who’d want to avoid it.

  • Any other ideas for improving the site.

Please don’t comment on political, religious or current affairs issues in this blog. This is about improving the site, not saving the world from an apocalypse.

                    • don't know last text was his banned with no explanation as to why or how long other than what's been discussed. You'd think you'd be happy to say why so the crowds aware of what's acceptable. If you're happy to devuldge the reasoning behind Brett's expulsion don't see why wiz is a big secret. I've been banned over the years and to my knowledge the only way of communication is by posting. So how would he know the reason if you thinks it's to a big secret to communicate ? Unless somethings changed you can't access any inbox or messages. Maybe you can add this to your big site review.

                    • From what I understand Wiz's suspension is simple. And similar to Brett's ("flag" symbol aside). Going overboard with inciting & causing conflict with others (Bondi Blog). By definition that's trolling. And when it goes overboard, well...

People get hung up over the "flag" but that's not the central issue. But it's a genius red herring that works in favour of trolling as a win-win trolling strategy. And extra artillery. The fact Brett didn't want to remove the flag and de-esculate forced Super's hand. Unfortunately, it's become a symbol of injustice, due to social agreement and storytelling rather than digging deeper and thinking.

Flag or not, Chopper or Penny, Flowers or Rainbows, pro-left, pro-right, pro-Isreal, pro-Palestine, pro-peace, pro-war, disagree with Super or not if you troll too much, you're going to cop a suspension.

The Safest Way: express your views respectfully. Is that really that hard?

If you think this site's bad, you're oblivious to what is going on in the world.

                    • Only going off what I've read on here but it seems the real issue Brett had was his being the only flag that was deemed to be banned. Is it true that people were still free to display Palestine and Ukraine flags at the time because that's what seems to be claimed and if this is the case it's not really the red herring you're swatting the topic away as. I for one certainly remember seeing the other flags displayed on here and yet no dramas arose until the star popped up.

                    • Don't include Ukraine in with it. There is no link between them and besides, Ukraine's flag is blue and sunflower yellow...have fun banning that.

                    • Mark, that's exactly the problem with socially agreed storytelling. First, we make it "fact". Then use it as a gold-standard, and get outraged at false comparisons. It's like giving ourselves an uppercut and blaming the book we're just written.

But I have to hand it to Brett it'a a brilliant strategy. If Super pulls him up for trolling he is the heroic "flag victim". The Woke Victim. His mission is complete, and still in motion, long after he's gone. Genius. As long as he keeps the flag...Super is at a lose-lose ... hence the power struggle over it.

The lesson here for mods is to probably go harder — on "all flags" and borderling symbols — to avoid all that misery and remove weaponry from clever would-be trolling. Oh what about him? He's got the Ukraine flag. Or what about him? He's got Ned Kelly. Sure, most probably have good intentions using symbols, but it's like anti-biotics: to kill bad bacteria it does the good bacteria too.

                    • I guess it all hinges on the question I've asked.  Are you talking it on notice ?

                    • It's not about Ukraine it's about the rights some are afforded and others aren't  based on which side or race you identify as being on. What if I was Russian?

I best be careful , I may get charged with trolling under the new anti trolling laws we seem to have adopted .

                    • Sorry Mark, What pivotal question ? What is to be taken "on notice"?

Lots of questions get asked regularly.

                    • It's a fair question , I raised this same question.

                    • Was Brett the only one told to remove his flag whilst others were allowed to stay ?

"I can't recall seeing a flag in recent times after the Brett incident. Now I know why, thanks Super.
Geez, Brett used it as a genius trolling weapon though. The consequences are still being felt.

"No. He was the only one who refused after I gave him 4 months to swap it. He said he wasn't changing and he'd cop the ban.
I've gone back 8 years and 1,000 members and Brett was the only one with an Israeli or Palestinian flag. He'd also been warned…"

"Yes, Super & mods were probably naive at one point in allowing flag avatars. That was then.
Brett showed we need the Brett Rule.
He showed, even despite being gone, how powerful a trolling weapon a flag can be. A genius trolling strategy. It creates…"
