You son of a ...legend

Is it unusual for s sporting legends children to not follow in their parents footsteps? Do you find it unusual that there isn't more kids from famous families doing well in the top grade of sport? To me it seems there is more chance of brothers playing first grade NRL than there is of a son following his father. For Eels fans one of the first names that spring to mind are Eric Grothe (Snr and Jr). Jarryd Hayne (son of Manoa Thompson). Joel Reddy (son of Rod Reddy). Are we seeing enough football bloodlines continuing in the game? How does it compare to other sports? The chances of playing more than a handful of NRL first grade games are pretty slim. To be a legend or well known name from the top 300? players, you would be think is quite rare. How much does good genetics play, and are we losing some of these kids to other careers because their parents don't want them to be footballers? The NRL is concentrating on rule changes and trying to get children participating in the sport, but is this enough? What about our so called "nurseries"? ate the Eels really doing enough to ensure their survival and future premierships?Should the board be implementing genetic testing and match making with other female sporting stars to improve the quality of our future teams? For example David Warner and Candice Falzon seem likely to have a sporting legend on their hands.Ok that's going a bit too far maybe, but are you surprised by the lack of famous family names in the NRL?

  • Wow!... That escalated quickly.
    • You can't be slow on these things Mapik, otherwise we wouldn't have an advantage.
  • I guess we would need to abort the female foetuses......but maybe keep the pretty ones for the cheer leaders squad.

How are things in China anyway Yobs?

  • No Phil, they can either be cheerleaders, female rugby league players, or play touch footy.
  • Slippery slope down eugenics mate.. That said, I watched my nephew play u/7 league, and there was a son of a manly player in the team (can't remember his name) and he absolutely carved. I'd say he'd watch a lot of footy and be coached well by his old man, but there were also kids who were full on league fanatics, who had zero coordination,,
    • It was all in jest Pete. This isn't Gattaca yet.
  • What famous family names are there in other sports?

    • Lampard for football in England.
I guess you could count Liam Reddy as a famous last name for football in Australia.
  • I reckon Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf's kid will have some pressure on him if he takes up Tennis as a sport!

  • A lot of it is pressure. The children of sporting greats often opt not to go into the athletic path as they're perceived to be like their parents. That being said, cricketers tend to do alright when it comes to producing international players. The Marsh family has done alright. From the looks of it Steve Waugh's son will play for Australia one day.
