World Club Challenge

It was a really good game between Wigan & Penrith with Wigan winning 16-12. Have to say what a great game Bevan French had setting up 2 tries and almost scoring a runaway try but disallowed for 1 foot slightly in front of the kicker. French would have been a great buy to return to the Eels as an x factor player. He's got heaps of speed, great passing game and his defence is good..So glad Penrith got beat bring them down off their high horse

  • My only problem with bringing French back is he would just be another mid signing in the NRL compared to ESL.

He plays good at 5/8 but still think he is to small for fullback and wing.

    • True but he played quite good against the NRL premiers which means he's improved

      • NRL premiers coming back from an offseason with some significant turnover from last year.

If Wigan were playing Grand Final Penrith they would have lost by a cricket score.

  • The reason Bevan French had no chance under Arthur is that he had the team running at 45 degrees and poor Bevan would only have a metre to move getting labeled being rag dolled by people who failed to work out the problem, now that he had his chance under decent coaching he is shining

  • Does England teams winning half to majority of these clashes lead to ESL being better than NRL or is it their season is underway and the conditions are in their favour? Penrith's first hit out since October, Wigan already played a club match in ESL and are in accustomed weather. Some say ESL is a better comp, but i believe you put Wigan in NRL this year they struggle to make the 8.

However, there was news coming out that NRL are interested in purchasing the ESL, I wonder if the way the WCC is played will be changed. I think maybe you could do it after the GF, players would be against it as they want to celebrate their win and relax. Plus the issue of where is it played is a constant issue.

As for French, his game suits ESL more. I do not think he would be an average Five-Eighth in the NRL.

    • They don't make the 8.

No ESL team has the requisite depth to compete in the NRL.

  • The Eels play a forward dominated brute force, through the middle game plan.

Our game and our recruitment is designed as a forward power team. Backs are absolutely seen but not heard. When was the last time you saw the Eels score some of the tries that Field and French serve up Wigan, week in week out.

I actually feel sorry for our backs, they are used primarily as battering rams and whenever they get the ball, they have absolute minimums to operate in. We don't pass the ball early to our backs like other teams do, so no incentive for the lads to return to the Eels.

I'm so glad for Bevan and Jai who are absolutely revered at Wigan and having the time of thier.lives playing footy.

  • Eels have had plenty of years where there outside backs have scored points plenty even that house hold name Ken Sio scored over 20 tries on the end of a Eels backline Radradra topped out at 24 tries one year and I'm pretty sure Sivo has had some 20 plus try scoring seasons also.

Where the Eels score a lot of points is off there set plays and they get to certain points on the field nd launch. There has got to be some more flexibility there.Attacking short sides has to be looked at more as we have 2 halves that are pretty good at it.

When you say Eels outside backs are used as battering rams what back 5 aren't that's a big part of the game now with ruck being so quick the back 5 have to pick up the slack. It's not just the eels outside backs that your pigeon holing it's pretty much the whole nrl.

Thats why French and Field thrive in the ESL because the footy is a different style over there and good luck to them.

    • Coryn we are without doubt the most conservative offensive team in the competition. That can't be argued.  We always play one pass off the ruck and then run. It's very unusual that we pass two or three off the ruck whereas most other teams do this regularly and it's these tactics that cut us up.

The only time we actually throw this stogy one dimensional offensive tactic out the window is when we are way behind with 10 minutes out. It's then when we actually play football and usually cut teams apart.

You aren't going to unlock todays defensive lines with one out plays but BA persists with it year after year. We have the talent to play football, perhaps one day we may use it ?

"With the backs it's no contest but I never said backs I said forwards.
At the beginning of the year on paper, our forwards shitted on theirs, however after only 8 rounds that can't be said anymore - they are over achieving and we are under."
