Will Streaming TV (eg Netflix) impact the NRL?

We all know about the NRL TV rights being sold for millions of dollars to free to air TV Channel 9, and pay TV FOXTEL. However recently digital streaming IPTV eg Netflix, has really made a big impact on the TV market. Younger people are more likely to stream content rather than watch free to air TV. FOXTEL has been lowering its package prices to compete with the low cost services such as Netflix. Fairfax media has tackled Netflix head on with Stan.If people are turning away from free to air TV, will advertisers still be willing to pay big money for sport? Will FOXTEL slowly fade away? Will the NRL eventually become its own "channel" and only be seen on streaming media? The next round of TV rights negotiations will have to consider the current and future impact of digital streaming, and the impact this may have on the funding of the game. Hopefully the games administration are proactive in this regard and won't just hang back for channel 9's "best offer".Currently the NRL has a digital season pass for sale to watch the game via the NRL website, whilst also selling TV rights to FOXTEL and 9. If the NRL sold off the rights to the digital streaming broadcast of the game, they could potentially have another source of income from companies such as Netflix, Stan, Quickflix, or Presto. This would also mean that people could watch the digital broadcast of the game on their TV as opposed to phone or laptop. Possibly this would also mean that replays of games could be watched on demand any time during the season.Would you ditch your FOXTEL multi-sport channels and subscribe to Netflix just for the NRL games? Could this generate additional revenue for the game, or would it just re-distribute funds from the existing market?

  • I hate streaming stuff, especially since Australia has pretty bad internet compared to some other countries, if NRL decide to switch to a streaming service, they will lose a lot of fans. Yes, we are in the dawn of the internet but services such as Netflix will not be able to offered the costs of offering NRL, especially considering Netflix does not use Ads as part of their service, meaning they will be subtracting a lot from their marketing idea (watching shows and movies with no ad breaks).

Personally I will always stick to my foxtel especially since I can watch every game live.
  • You could drown watching tv in a stream, why would you do that?

    • On a pool floaty of course.

    • Agreed
  • Glad this has been brought up. Im looking to get the NRL digital pass or Foxtel. Seeing the comments on NRL digital pass makes me think twice now. Think Foxtel might be the way.
  • Netflix is costing me about $12 a month, but since I subscribed by iTunes, I can use ITunes gift cards when they are on special and usually save 20%. Of course those figures are on top of my internet which I normally have anyway. Not sure where you are getting your figures.
  • Also since that Netflix pricing level covers two concurrent devices, I share that cost with my father who uses the same login on his TV (in a different premises). I also share Stan with him via the same method.
  • The sports question has been asked of Netflix in the past, their response was "never say never". However this was based on America, and as stated above the NBA and NFL have their respective digital packages.

  • Its definitely on the cards and its definitely the future of sport.

Fark Foxtel and their outrageous fees, if this option existed right now they'd be goooonnneeee!!

Ive got Netflix and Stan and Ive never once had an issue with buffering or poor connection. If the broadcasters of NRL can guarantee connection quality then its a no brainer. Bye bye Fox.

  • Netflix pricing (not including ISP charges)
    Basic $8.99 per month
    Standard $11.99 per month
    Premium $14.99 per month
