With Will Smith coming into the side at 5/8, the question that must be asked is can he do it , will he do it. I've been one that thinks Dylan is a great defender but has been below average in attack, stumbling when asked to create, which hurts our attacking chances. We become predictable when we rely solely on Moses to create. It appears we are a much better team when our 5/8 is firing and creating chances. So back to Will, he has been in our system for a long time without being able to nail a starting spot in the squad. Whats peoples thoughts can he step up this week or has BA blundered not going with Rankin. One gets the feeling that this week is huge for Will, not sure if its a last chance scenario, for him to showcase his skills in a starting side, and earn a future contract, but i would think its damn close. So in saying that im predicting a huge game from him. Whats peoples thoughts. Will he do it, or has BA blundered.

Honestly I'm sick of reading this guys name . He's in the same category as Ben Roberts . It's like playing Russian roulette except Id rather punch the bullet into my temple than watch Will Smith play another minute.

I don't think Will Smith will ever be a starter in first grade for Parra, and I doubt that is the plan really. Not too sure of the reasoning behind signing Rankin if Smith was always going to be the backup half, but there is probably more to it. Agreed though, this is a chance for Will Smith to show the coach what he has to offer. If he can spark our attack, at the very least he has earnt the right to more minutes off the bench.
There are quite a few clubs with issues in their halves.
To be honest I don't recall any of them knocking on our door enquiring about Will Smith.
Don't get me wrong he is good for that short burst at the back end of a game when the opposition is tired but he isn't a starting quality half.

Will looks fitter and bigger than in previous seasons, if he can defend well and we win comvisinglly he can become our best option
I think Rankin would have been a better selection. Rankin is a great goal kicker and a good kicker in general play, good defensively and a good organiser. Can Smith do all that is the question. I like Will Smith off the bench but the whole 80 at number 6? I'm not totally convinced.
Monto why are you so obsessed with having rankin in? over the course of his NRL and SL career he has never set the world on fire, you could really lump him in the same category as Will Smith.
You also understand that there is a depth chart that the coach looks at, playing 2 NSW cup games in how ever many years doesnt move you up the depth chart.
When Will has played NSW cup, he has done as good as Rankin has - so why should Rankin move up the charts after 2 good games?
Also, do you realise we dont need a good back up goal kicker in the 17 if both Moses and the King are playing?
It seems as soon as someone has one or two good games in a below strength NSW cup comp they are worlds beaters - look at the wraps on Penisini and Dunster (to name two) who have been between absolute shite and ok, but yet they need to go into an NRL squad who has lost one game.....
PLayers need to earn promotion through consistent performances over a number of weeks not just one or two - caveat: unless an nrl players is going that shite or is suspended or injured...
I think Smith is there for his defence not his ceativity. Who knows what BA is thinking and where he sees him fitting in. I wonder whether he will take over from Mahoney at some stage to give him a rest and Catrwright will slot in his place. If that happens, watch out for more crabbing across the field.
Dylan Brown is good with his defence and is honestly less creative. I think the Eels need more of a creative / defencive number 6 but also someone who can kick in general play to relieve Mitch Moses but also someone who can organise which both Brown and Smith seem to lack. That's why I think Rankin should be at least be given an opportunity.
