Why Rugby Union is better

I'm watching the club rugby on the ABC at the moment.
Even though it is so many levels lower in professionalism than the NRL the refs have the respect of the players.  One bloke from Sydney Uni was called out for punching another player.  The ref went on the advice of the touch judge and gave him 10 in the bin.  There was no argument from the player, even though it was obvious that he thought he'd been hard done by.  He didn't answer back and copped it on the chin. That is certainly something missing from the NRL

I'm a huge fan of league and I see union as an option when there's no league on tv. As far as discipline and respect go, we really need to learn a lesson from the rugby boys.

  • I agree. I love watching the Shute Shield. Plus, it's all these rich little white boys who went to posh boys' schools being smashed by monster Polynesians. The standard of play sometimes borders on hapless, but in this era of clinical professionalism, it makes a really refreshing change.
    • Hey I went to Kings, we're not all knobs allthough some of us like anywhere certainly are. Just saying I loved playing rugby alot more than playing league as a forward your role is much more rewarding than just getting smashed and smashing others like in league. Other than that I like the running rugby that is so common in the lower grades and super 14. International rugby is a joke though because the northern hemisphere won't agree to rule changes.

I prefer to watch the eels play over anything else though.
  • So rugby union is better than league becuase the refs have the respect of the players..... com'n... what type of a weak arguemnt is that.

Rugby is as broing as you can get.... Nothing wrong with a bit of passion and the odd argument with the ref. Just out of interest, are the refs mic'ed up on the ABC.. beacuse chance are you are just not hearing what goes on teh field.
    • I think league is a much better game and I follow it passionately.
I think we've lost our way with respect for authorities. Players like Thurston can give the ref an R rated gob full and it's fine.

They were mic'd on the field. You got to hear what the touchy said to the ref, what the ref said to the player in question and the response of the player after being marched.
  • you can easily find footage of union players blowing up at ref's too. it may not have happened in the match you watched but it sure does happen.
    • What are the repercussions when something like that happens in rugby?
  • I grew up in Carlingford, we used to play against Kings... you guys used to smash us! I don't think we could stop laughing at that dicky blazer you poor saps had to wear!
    • PS Just watched the Sydney Uni/Manly game with 8 VBs. Very, very entertaining, high quality game. Students won with a penalty try in the last minute.
  • There must be over 300 games a year. Thurston is not a 1 off but it's quite rare. There is a lot of exachanges between player and refs but it usually so the team can have a breather.
  • The title of your blog made me laugh, Union better lol haha, until i read the rest. I agree, we are heading the way of soccer where everyone on the side seems to crowd around the ref and have a go.

One reason the union girls don't argue about a decision is that they don't even know what the fuck the penalty was for, so many silly rules.
