WHY NOT PUT CHEIKA ON EELS FOOTBALL BOARD?

It appears Michael Cheika is out of the running as Coach but what about we create a casual vacancy on the Football Club Board and appoint him? Self made millionaire with connections all over the world. Could become our version of Politis etc. We just appointed a person from Parramatta Council onto the board to fill a casual vacancy but wouldn't Cheika provide all the professional international contacts that we desperately need? I think he would provide not only the contacts but the football IQ we appear to currently lack on the Board.

  • What's in it for him?

    • He wants to get involved with NRL so no better stepping stone than to help rebuild an NRL club. Would look great on his resume. He doesn't need the money

      • Yes PT, he would make a great member, I supported him for the coaches job thinking the contagion would work on the board.....how about another approach....appoint him General Manager Football and let him appoint everyone required from First Grade Coach down, he could have two assistant coaches working for him....say any of the incumbents/applicants or even McDermott outright. Then he finds the best pathway's coaches and applies them.

i.e. A proper executive manager of football.....he can be taken onto the board as a CEO of the club as evolution takes place. Matt Cameron has evolved into CEO through this same process at Penrith.

          • Too many big words in that sentence Moggie, stick to the Stick symbols, you know like the ones you draw at play school!    "get a dog upya"     ????   mmmm'm

  • A Politis, is so much more then self made money. A Politis type figure has to have the utmost passion for the club, for the team, the drive to put winning above everything else. The motivation to use his money, his skills, his connections, his deals where players make $$ at the detriment to his own personel  busness interests are all crucial to having a Politis type figure head.

I dont know if Cheika has that type of love and devotion to our club. It takes a very very special person with un matched passion and drive for his NRL club to be a Politis type figure. There are not many. Id suggest Souths with Rusty and Packers at times come the closest, but none of them are as hands on as Politis perhaps. Close though.

The Penns at Manly dont come close even though they own the team. The Broncos with with News Corp are right up there.

Rebecca Frizell of the Titans struggles, Matt Tripp / Jerry Ryan do well at the Storm.

    • Cheika may just like us to the extent of cancelling his "Everest Trip" after all hundreds have climbed Everest, Parra is a much bigger challenge LOL

    • He may not have the passion for the club at the moment but his connections and football IQ is desperateley needed. I suspect he would be passionate for success and would come with the organisational ability to lift our professionalism.  We almost seem to run like we are allergic to successfull people. Surely we must have approached the two men who at least have business experience and footy IQ in Peter Wynn and Mick Cronin to be on the Football Club Board? Surely many times? I hope. The only other Eels supporter with international recognition I can think of is Paul Hogan. It would certainly make for interesting TV to have a close up of the Gladiator followed by a close up of Crocodile Dundee. Have we ever asked him to be involved? We just seem to be bereft of ideas on how to attract the necessary smart/successful/winners people to the Football Club Board. Fong is not a dope and would love to see him put his hand up. His Dad helped set up the club. Likewise Muttman. Having someone from the local Council placed as a casual vacancy does not smack of the pursuit of excellence. We are ticking woke boxes instead of pursuing excellence in all our endeavours. I would take Cheika as a casual vacancy filler over either of the two just appointed There will be many, many long term supporters just about ready to give it away if the Committee do not get the Coaching right. McDermott/Cheika combination smells like success. Both are winners. We have been allergic to successful people for almost 40 years. Time to climb out of the primordial soup.

  • I don't know much about the bloke, except he failed as the wallabies union coach last time around. Who would he attract in rugby league? I would imagine he would less pull than any respected people in the rugby league world. He isn't going to pay the players out of his own pocket, so money means bugger all. Politis loves the roosters and is willing to put his money in.

    • Bradley, he coached the Wallabies and also Argentina to a world cup semi final, a competition 10 times bigger than anything League could put together. Who could he attract to Rugby league?....well think about the quality of Rugby players out there Brad.

If you read my comments, you would realise he is an elite "sports coach".

As Adnan say under here he has gone British Rugby, again game much bigger than NRL. You may remember something about Rugby when we once had the best Rugby league/Union back in the world, you remember his name Bradley....come on think hard.

A wonderful opportunity lost to Parramatta again.

      • Besides from New Zealand the rest of the teams are completely shit house. Why would you want rugby players who aren't anywhere near the players in rugby league already playing the game. Takes 12 months for them to change over codes. Unless it's a winger they struggle to play league.

The world cup isn't bigger than nrl, why do you think so much young talent is coming through the nrl pathways? Because they don't want to play union and only go to cash in. Except for kiwis but Australia isn't even the conversation union wise compared to nrl. BA could of coached them to the world cup final and still had no idea about the game. Argentina Had a lot of the best players from the French competition, also the easiest draw. Still got flogged by nz in the group stages.
