Why not just have a Top 35

In any given year, there will be a number of clubs who use 30+ players. Why on earth then do we have a Top 25 and not a Top 35.

The second-tier salary cap is a blight on the game right now. It means young, up-and-coming players who deserve to playing NRL may not be able to do so because of the stinginess of the second-tier and NYC caps.

I find it amusing that we have this NRL Rookie promo happening at the moment. That's the dream isn't it. That you get yourself a fringe contract and earn your way up to the top.

Except the reality is that no matter how well you play, your club may not be able to start you in first grade at least until someone gets injured.

How much simpler would the salary cap be for clubs and supporters to understand if each club simply had a single Top 35 and only players from that Top 35 were eligible to play. This might include your current Top 25, your top five second-tier players and your five young players who might step up.

Right now, we don't who the Top 25 are. We have to guess that a player who we thought should be in the team, has been dropped because of form or because of cap issues. There is no transparency and it's too easy for clubs to get themselves into trouble if their primary squad has problems with form or injury.

A Top 35 or at least a Top 30 would make all these problems go away. I can't see a single reason not to do it.

  • Just sums up how dumb the NRL are!!! There just seems to be a lack of any common sense or brains from boards in the NRL code wether it's at club level or the NRL board itself.
    • I have been saying this exact issue for YEARS now and people are only just cottoning on.

Any club with an injury crisis will burn through their "second tier cap" and it somehow affects the year after, further crippling you. it's a stupid system by stupid people that is clearly broken...but they will punish people who break it because they have to save face. when they change the rule finally which they will parra will get no apology after being screwed over for using what was an already broken system.

  • Each club should have on their website the teams listed kind of like they do now but with it being accurate.
    NRL
    NYC
    Wenty
  • So the breaches amount to 100,000 for the top 25. Not much if you ask me.
  • Its funny because at the start of the year there were reports of Parramatta having only a top 22 on the salary cap. Last year it was reported that we only had a top 21 same as in 2013. This was supposably caused by the paying off the 10 people that Ricky Stuart cut whilst under contract. Surely, surely common sense tells you that if you have only 22 players you are banking on only having 5 injuries all year. We had 5 on the sidelines before round 1. If you only have 22 players you will go over the 2nd tier cap, therefore going over the 20s cap, and the 20s 2nd tier cap. This all flows on as people get pushed up the grades due to poor management of the First grade Cap. Im not sure who the incredibly dense person is who is in charge of the salary cap management for the eels, but he needs to change occupations and fast. Maccas wouldn't hire the poor bloke. Common sense just isn't that common anymore.

Also i love how the media and club is blaming Ricky. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the the current board in-charge at that time? They would of allowed ricky to cut these 10 players, therefore affecting not only that year but the next 4 years. Just when this year was suppose to be a promising one, once again, the front office makes a joke of our club once again.

  • Like honestly why even have tiers?
If a club wants to spend more money on their 20s or reserve grade so what?
Yeah the ultimate aim is to win first grade but what's the point in having all these tiers?
    • Exactly..... "Duh, to make it fair"

    • Because then a rich club like the Roosters or Broncos could sign up an entire 1st grade side in reserve grade then just rotate players.

  • Make what fair? If a club wants to invest more in 20s than other clubs and have a shitter first grade that should be up to the club
  • Why does it matter how many players a club has in the "top" amount of players...... If a club has the money why not have a top 30
