  • who has actually seen Thornett play? I'm 37 and not old enough, I don't think there would be too many that have on here.

    • jamesy: Have`nt seen Thornett play!! Choke, choke !!.You are new born kittens!--don`t know what you have missed. Saw him stacks of times. One of my favourites of all time JH is my other all timer. Will not, can not, say who was the better. How do you pick one diamond above the other?

    • I have seen both jamesy, of the two, without doubt it would be Hayne because he could read a game whereas

Thornett would follow the back line and jump in to make the extra while the forwards were bashing each other after a scrum or when they used to have scrums,But his "D" was awsume

I am 75 years by the way

  • Interesting topic Jackpot. I saw little bits of Thornett but it's too dim and mostly from 1971 when he was at the end of his career. My father was a massive fan and raved about the difference Thornett made to the team. I'll pose this question to him tomorrow and add it. As for Hayne, he is the most talented Eel I've ever seen. He was on his way to being the best ever Eel before he left.
    • I'll add that with our father mate.

Dad always said that we were a different side when Thornett was in the team.

I have a memory of Dad saying that when Parra made the semi's in the early 60's we could have stopped St.George's run but Thornett had to return to England to honour his contract before the NSWRL season was out and we just couldn't compete.

While it's all "fantasy footy", it's an interesting thought to ponder over that our team of the early 60's, when we had both Thornett's in the team and reaching the finals could have not only claimed the club's maiden title, but also stopped the legendary St.George team of that era

    • Fit and Strong looking bloke, looks like he wouldn't be out of place in the modern game.
    • so mate, what was our father's opinion on THORNETT vs HAYNE ?

  • I never saw Thornett play but my grandfather did. He rates Thornett as the best he's ever seen. Better than Hayne.

  • Thornett
  • For how many years was Thornett the best player in the world?
