  • The last two weeks I've been thinking about this. Is it Cayless???

whoever it is. Get rid of him.

  • Yeah it is Steve Antonelli and BA. Barrett and Murphy do the offence.

Antonelli was the ruck coach for Souths last year and in 2021.

  • Our new defence coach

  • I don't care who our defensive coach is. The Eels have operated with condensed defensive lines for years, through multiple defensive coaches, so 'the system' is the head-coaches system. The buck stops with BA.

I lost count of how many times Manly spread the ball from within their own 20m, usually to the left, and the camera angle would capture Simonsson standing at about a 5/8 spot on the field. Sure, the Eels' defensive line retreats, but the result was to constantly allow Manly out to the 35-40m line on the 2-3rd tackle, and thus put Manly into attacking kicking position by 5-6th tackle. The condensed defensive line just seems to gift teams meters if they are prepared to risk 2-3 passes wide of the ruck coming off their line. And we all see counting numbers problems when the Eels defend their line, with the condensed line creating another problem when they can't reterat (past their goal line), of the centre not sliding out.

I just don't get this persistence with defensive structures that get exploited the same way over and over.

    • 100% Daz, Manly & South's especially, with depth in their shape & speed in their backs have exploited this for years.

  • This defensive structure has been our DNA for 5-8 years I believe.  With 95% of teams starting to play ball more and second phase is second nature, we need to make line speed is right on the money. The first contact must be effective and dominance in the play the ball has to be non negotiable.  If line speed, strong contact and ruck dominance not 100% sides will strip us out wide every play. SA has a long standing reputation in the football world for his defensive skill set.  Something is a miss.

Almost needs to be a MUST WIN next week.  WE are playing the most dominant footy team over the past 4 seasons.

Something must change and old fashioned COURAGE needs to come to the fore front at both the Selection table and in between the ears.  Not sure if this is becoming a moving target  which makes it a lot harder to get bulls eye.

  • The two defensive failures in the Eels system and may I say, this has been the case for many years, so it has to be a BA system.

1: Always compressed, even in our own red zone we just have wingers standing at centre and we do not have very fast wingers who can turn and show the attack over the side line.

2: No aggresive line speed in defence, we are so passive, the attcking runners are meeting our line way too far, they gain far too much field position in 5 tackles. This is why a team with attacking shape and a top fullback, aka Souths, will always pull our pants down.

This year in year out shit is just sucking the passion out of me.

  • In 2020 our defence was the 3rd best in the comp based on points sgainst. In 2021 it was 4th best. Last year it slipped to 8th and with Hodgson I always believed it would get worse.

Structure is based on personnel, have the right players it holds up and wrong players it falls apart

We have two of the best attacking props in the game but they don't work the hardest in defence

This year Junior has played 192 minutes for 85 tackles

RCG                     177 minutes  for 91 tackles

    Fisher-Harris     102 minutes  for  80 tackles

JP and RCG don't really chase the attack they don't push out. When most props are making a tackle at least every minute and a half our bookends make 1 about every 2 minutes.

What that means is that the 9 snd 13 have to work extra hard to cover their defensive deficiencies. In 20 and 21 we were top 4 in D because Reed busted his arse and N Brown and Stone provided the linespeed.. Last year we dropped to 8th because we lacked an aggressive lock.

We need a harder working hooker and our D will improve

      • I agree that Too Critta May and Tago would be great but there is a reason they are an anomaly.

So let's look at our boys, Waqa yes he is an impressive athlete with power but he does not reliably execute his role. He is a poor defender and fails to ice in 50/50 point scoring opps. He is unbelievably bad under the high ball. All of those things are more valuable than the tough carries.

Sivo and Penisini are powerful out of our end so that's 2/4.

Dunster, Komoalafe, Rusty. They don't exactly scream power do they. I listened to an interview with Dunster where he was asked to bulk up during his rehab and he is probably stronger than he looks. I'd be willing to go as far to say we have 3/4.

Mustard will come in I have no doubt and I reckon he is no slouch.

The difference between Waqa and Dunster/ Rusty/Asi? Reliability under the high ball, class, composure.

Simo I'd say he is half n half. Not ready to write him off just yet. I think he can be a great first grader, he has all the ingredients but I think he has lost his confidence. He is trying too hard which is a good thing.

        • Who is Mustard?
