Where to play Hayne and French in the same team.

2017, Hayne is back, but we have an unpolished gem in Bevan French. Trouble is he's to little for the wing, yer he's a good finisher and super quick, but he is going to get mugged on the line every time and teams are going to exploit it like last week.I can see BF being as good as Billy Slater as a fullback, where he can put his legs to the best advantage. But with Hayne back, one of them needs a different job. Has the time come for Hayne to 5/8 and a Blues captaincy from a role of leadership? If he wants to he can.

    • Been wondering about that, thinking he'd simply be all over the park, whenever and wherever he sees opportunity :) You reckon he'd handle that much defence?
    • I suggested this in another thread. Hayne has shown he is a class defender, and I think his added mass would help him further.

    • Agree Mick this is the way I would go as well. I'm just making an educated guess but that would have to be close to the cheapest 1,6,7 and 9 going around in the competition. In no way is that a reflection of what these four players have to offer because I'm excited by this prospect. Well done to the club if they secure Norman and Hayne for reasonable sums.
    • Robo is 34 now I think, getting very old for a footy player, but is a short term option for next year as backup hooker.

      There are several scenarios:

JH to fb, BF to halfback - believe he has played there before (tackling may be a problem), Semi to right centre, Guth to wing and Taka as super sub off bench

      OR

BF fb, Hayne right centre, Semi wing, Guth & Taka as above & new halfback.

  • Bev stays on the wing unless Hayne goes into the centres and Taka go back to the forwards. But for me Hayne wears #1
  • Yes Ross, I'm with you the time has come, jarryd needs to step up and and embrace the 5/8 roll, Bev will be completely exposed on the wing after a while.

    • Bev was completely exposed against the Roosters last week, teams will see that and from now on he will be competing for high bombs on the try line with Fijians a foot taller than him lol, great player, but will struggle on the wing.
  • I've so been looking forward to the Hayne to 5/8 blogs
  • Doesn't really matter where you play them but French, Norman, and Hayne need to be in the 1,6,7. Either one can play first or second receiver, even as a fullback on the sweep. We flirted with the idea of Norman being on the sweep on the right a fair bit this year when Foran was fit but we never really had a sweeping fullback that was as dangerous running the ball as he was passing the ball on the left side. You don't have that problem with Norman, French and Hayne in the same team.

In defence I think we should have French as fullback and Hayne in the front line but in attack there's a few possibilities and I don't think we should or will go with the idea of Hayne purely as a five-eighth or French purely as a fullback.

  • Thats just plain common sense, just plain Bob.
