After reading Jake Arnold's story about Nathan Hindmarsh and the good things he does for charity it got me thinking, what other players of any team come to mind that have impressed you off the field?
For me it was dare I say it (cringe) a Melbourne Storm player. My 11 year old son loves them, which made last years GF hard on both of us, lol.......still is.........ahhhh deep breaths, deep breaths. Anyway I took him to see them at a pre season training 2009, they were training with the AFL Carlton Blues as a promo, anyway his idol (and this borders in obsessive) is Billy Slater, closely fallowed by Englis, anyway I waited for the training to finish and with his recently bought jersey and texter in hand he waited, when Billy came over it was obvious he gave a quick smile, got his photo and he was out of there, Blair was pretty good, but not much said. The next was Cameron Smith who I have always liked as a player, same thing, smile and quickly moved on, but while I was taking his pic with Cam, Cooper Cronk was standing behind him and when asked by Cam what he was doing he said waiting for a pic and the pen, but what made my sons eyes light up like cracker night was the fact that Cooper asked how he was going and did he want him to sign his jersey and seemed genuinely interested, asking him questions about his day and the training. I was stoked and thanked him.
Now I know these players probably do this a lot and it may become a task, but do they realise the kids live and breath there name, there ain't one day goes by that my son won't mention their names.........ahhhh again deep breaths lol
Another name that I have heard very good things about was the now retired Brisbane player Shane Webcke, always willing to take time with the kids and fans.
So I'll leave it to you all to educate me of others that's deserve the accolades.

  • Iv'e always had a high opinion of Cooper Cronk, just seems like a top bloke. Always when he is interviewed he is forthright, well read and is also very humble. I reckon he would of been the kid at school who the girls wanted to be with and the boys wanted to be.

Just wish he was from NSW..
  • thats not gay right?, wanting to be like him, lol......nahh just kidding, as Seinfeld says, "not that there's anything wrong with that" haha.
I just couldn't believe how the others basically just did their job and moved on as quick as possible and I'd have to ask them, they wouldn't just walk up, but Cooper, he made sure he waited and actually communicated with him as if he was a long lost friend. If it wasn't for him I may never have taken my son again.
Yup you and me both, getting real sick of this Qld dominance.....
  • Luke Burt is a good bloke, as is Ben Smith.

"NOS, thanks for the heads up on that buddy.
I haven't listened to that SC playbook podcast (yet) but have listened to Adam Druissi talk over the years. He's got a good head on his shoulders. A smooth operator.
Great summary. I'm also a big believer…"
