So Trent Barrett has fallen on Gould's Excalibur and his NRL head coaching career is pretty much done after two failed stops at Manly and Canterbury, after two goes and one of the two only producing 4 wins, coaches hardly ever get a third chance. It is a shame as Barrett gave his all in the roles, you can tell how much he cared and how much he put into the role. Whether you dislike a coach or not, or consider a coach awful at their job, if they give their all that is all you can ask for at times and Barrett did that.

Now comes the tricky part, who do Canterbury bring in. With their current squad including Addo-Carr, Burton, TPJ, Thompson and good squad players, added with Kikau, Mahoney and Sutton willing to move once cap space is available it is an attractive job. Only a few issues, first being their spine, they have 6 & 9 rapped up. Though you need at least 3/4 of you spine being quality or in some cases all 4 firing. Look at the top teams; Penrith all 4 are quality, Melbourne all 4, Parramatta all 4, Roosters 3/4, Brisbane are an exception with only Reynolds being really top notch and NQ having Dearden and Townsend being good, Drinkwater is a gun and Robson can play too, not what you would call quality but still good. Bulldogs have a decent forward pack, but will no money for 2023 after the big 3 (Kikau, Mahoney and Sutton), they have no cash to get a 1 or a 7, Dufty off contract, have Flanagan but he is just a squad player. Burton is struggling due to being the face, the main guy and he thrives off eyes up footy, he is a 6 not an organiser.

Secondly, who would want to go there with Gus having such an influence. Ciraldo was mentioned after he had a connection to Gus at Penrith, Ciraldo is in a spot where he can wait and pick whatever job he wants, he is in no rush for a job so doubt he would go to Canterbury unless he had 100% say with Gus that is not possible. Paul Green is throwing his resume around everywhere, however him being a premiership winner and losing the Cowboys job due to his personality in the facility with players i doubt he would swallow his pride with Gus, especially with the high chance of numerous jobs being open like the Warriors, Gold Coast, Wests, Newcastle and Canberra. Wests have Sheens yes but Sheens seems to be a lot better to work with than Gus. Flanagan looks like a possibility, he would not like having Gus over his shoulder though with Kyle there he might try to make it work, but Flanno is a similar personality and ego to Gus and it will cause clashes. Canterbury job is more so attractive to coaches looking for 2nd, 3rd or even 4th chances, like Neil Henry, John Cartwright, Stephem Kearney types who will be just thankful for the opportunity that they will tolerate Gus and hope it will lead to some success and regain some respect and integrity as an NRL coach.

Final thing i want to touch on is how would someone like Reed feel about this news? You cannot tell me that Reed meeting Barrett did not have anything to do with Reed signing with Canterbury. The money and Gus's negotiation skills are what got him over the line, though you cannot tell me Reed signed not caring if Barrett was there or not, he would have sold him what he plans with the team and how he plans to use Reed. Whoever comes in next could impact Reed's views. He could get Flanno who is a proven winner yet also a proven hard ass. Or get David Furner (current Interim) who will be a yes man to Gus will no real vision until they get the real thing.

Though at least we must consider ourselves lucky with have BA.

  • Couldn't give a fark about Seedy Greedy Reedy, or the dogs, or any eels fans who think there is a chance he's staying.

    • this, and we are lucky to have BA, LB.

There was no vision sold as we have that at the Eels, it was all about the little $.

Also did Barrett really fall on Gus's excalibur or did Gus poke his excalibur into Barrett.

    • Did not say once in the blog that he's staying, i am saying the issue he is having going there, which is funny.

  • In a perfect world , Canterbury poach Ricky Stuart . Now that would be enough to make me stiffer than the old pillow case Poppa keeps in his study .

    • Are you a Viagra or Cialis guy Wiz?

  • I really think their next head coach should be David Kidwell.

I would hate to lose his masterful defensive tactics from Parra but we would just have to manage.

  • I wonder if we would look at Barrett as our next attacking coach. Im sure i heard somewhere that this is Murphy's last year.

P.s. Guaranted Gus said resign and save face (to have any chance of another head coach job in the future and we will still have got a full payout) or we sack you and risk never getting another gig - but it was all Barretts decision....

  • Freddy Fingering Fittler will be the Bulldogs coach

    • theres plenty of talk about that possibility PT but i reckon they will go flanno.

"Yeah, good point, PT. Clever thinking. Maybe, dunno.
I'll have to double-check timelines, but I suspect Coleman was a PLC director (from 2019, I believe) before the partnership with Parra Council was initiated (more recently)."
