Western Sydney Stadium design shown in new images

HERE’S your chance to have first look at the new $300 million Western Sydney Stadium.

Infrastructure NSW released new concept images of the stadium, part of the State Government’s $1.6 billion stadia strategy to improve sporting infrastructure across the state.

The 30,000 seat arena will go up on the site of Parramatta Stadium and boast the steepest stands of any venue in the country when it opens in 2019.

Work to demolish the existing stadium began earlier this month with construction to begin next year.

The images depict the rectangular stadium with all 30,000 seats under roof cover plus a bustling precinct that will provide pedestrian and transport links, and improved access to Parramatta Park.

The new stadium will play home to the NRL’s Parramatta Eels and A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers.

There will be improved pedestrian and public plaza areas and landscaping around the stadium. The stadium will provide seating for 30,000 plus a standing area for 1,000.

Lendlease won the contract to design and build the Western Sydney Stadium, which they say will become a world-class venue and revolutionise the spectator experience.

“This project is an opportunity for us to continue our legacy in the delivery of important public and sporting infrastructure, including the original Parramatta Stadium in 1986, but also to continue our commitment to enhancing Greater Western Sydney’s prosperity,” Lendlease managing director of building Dale Connor said.

Minister for sport and Western Sydney minister Stuart Ayres said the stadium was a game changer for Sydney’s sporting heartland.

Parramatta Stadium demolition

“The new jewel in the Parramatta crown, Western Sydney Stadium was designed with the entire fan experience in mind, featuring … an activation precinct set to draw the crowds on game day,” Mr Ayres said.

Western Sydney Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said the Wanderers match-day experience would be like no other when the new stadium opened its doors.

Tsatsimas said that the stadium would boast an atmosphere that would help take the Wanderland experience to the next level.

The stadium will be used for rugby league, football, rugby union and a range of other events. It will generate between 600 and 900 jobs once operational for sporting event days and major events.

“It needs to replicate, to a significant degree what was formerly at Parramatta Stadium. I have no doubt that the new western Sydney stadium will do that.

“We’re very excited about it coming to fruition and being a reality.”

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said the stadium would bring a new level of comfort and entertainment for rugby league fans.

“We have always said that the best way to attract bigger attendances is by providing fans with better facilities,” he said.

“This stadium will bring fans closer to the action than ever and have all the modern comforts that fans deserve.

“When you consider that the stadium will also be near transport, restaurants and other services I have no doubt it will be a huge boost for our fans.”

The pictures reveal improved access to Parramatta Park. The stadium will boast the steepest seats in the country when it is opened in 2019.

But there is controversy too, with the iconic Memorial Pool due for the wrecking ball at the end of March to make way for the stadium.

Planning work on the Parramatta light rail system is also just starting and it’s already been confirmed the nearest rail stop will be at Prince Alfred Square, a short walk from the new stadium.

On Satuday a public exhibition of the plans held at Parramatta RSL Club attracted just 13 residents.

Major concerns raised included the the project footprint, activation of stadium precinct on non-event days, and traffic and access around the stadium on event days.

Lendlease will now submit a planning application for stage two, which includes detailed design of the stadium and surrounds as well as construction and operation of the new stadium.

  • Why are all the Eels fans wearing Sneans ?
    • What's a snean?
  • This is going to bring a lot more people to our games thats for sure, not only eels supporters but i recon it will encourage a lot of rival fans to make the trip to parra when they might not have before.

The steepest stands in Australia is a great selling point i recon, this really should be the best ground for rl in the country, im tipping the first game to be a huge sellout.

    • The steepest stands in Australia is what will probably make me and many others think twice about going to a game unless they have a reserved Old Farts section down the bottom nearer the action.

All well and good for some while a very large contingent will be disadvantaged.

Unless there is proper seating PLANNING to insure the less agile are catered for, it could in fact backfire on them to some extent.

I am all for the Game Day experience as long as it doesn't end up with me (or others) ending up in hospital just getting there.

  • 30,000 won't be enough in ten years time
    • Don't worry, the NRL will make sure we don't win any comps during that time, and will help keep the crowds away.
    • I know BlacJac I know. Btw does a premiership come with this?
    • Yep Jac - should have gone for another Suncorp type design.

50K and the QueeRZlanders pack it out.

  • Sneakers and jeans . Seinfeld style .
