Americans Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan were killed in Tajikistan while cycling through "Isis territory" in order to vindicate their belief in human kindness.

A progressive young American couple was killed in an Islamic State-claimed terrorist attack last month while on a bike trip around the world … Throughout the trip, the couple embraced the kindness of strangers and sought to demonstrate that people are inherently good.

“You read the papers and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place,” Austin wrote. “People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil.”

“I don’t buy it,” he continued. “Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own … By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind.”

Some conservatives have framed the tragedy as a cautionary tale about not just the perils of travel but also naivete in general. In their telling, an overly generous understanding of human nature is behind much of today’s progressive movement, including calls to radically scale back immigration enforcement and policing and support for socialism.

More proof the world is full of idiots unable to accept the reality that the world is huge f##kin mess.

  • Darwin award.

  • I don’t believe this is how it went. They were just travelling along and got attacked. Attacks on tourists in that region never happens. So it’s actually just a massive tragedy and if you go on their Instagram they’re just good people with a lot of followers.
    • That’s right good people usually get killed by and people - that’s how it works but they didn’t think so.

    • What I read yesterday was that the area was listed as a level 1 to moderate threat and had been listed as an ISIS habituated region . The advice was only to express caution though so no , not red alert type stuff .

Certainly not an area I’d be peddling along at 10kmph .

    • Regardless if attacks happen regularly or not, Americans are despised throughout the region and different groups were known to be around the area.  Maybe attacks were rare as others weren't stupid enough to be in area without security teams or proper research and knowledge.  To go away from secure areas without proper precautions shows how stupid they were relying on the goodwill and fundamently flawed thought they people are by nature good.

  • At what point did we start calling isis members human. They have NO humanity so they are not human, Animals have more compassion than they do. They hate us, simple as that. All they want is for all of us to die. To bad that couple didn't work this out before they delivered themselves straight into enemy hands.

  • Muslims and the western world, Christians included, should be very much kept apart.

Religion has alot to answer for.
