We Wont Compete

Ok, so 2011 has gone from exciting to worrying. All this talk of a HUGE signing hasn't happened and wont happen. The simple fact of the matter is that we have a squad that is about $1m under the cap, thats 20%. We can't complete with the squads who are operating on the full quota (Saints, Roosters, Storm, Souths, Bulldogs etc etc).

Simply it will be a rebuilding year and one less year for Hindy to get his much deserved premiership. Hopefully we will unearth some exciting talent and keep them with the money we have and also sign a marquee player for 2012.

  • I think we can have a better 2011 then most people tend to think.

The talent across the park is there, and the players are thriving under SK's coaching already, so I expect a better year than last.

Plenty of talents to be unearthed Andy, and most, if not all are willing to stay for the long-term.
  • Thanks for the positive words Ricky. Hopefully we will be one of those "champion teams", not a team of champions. I know that we will be more disciplined and structured under SK as well as being fitter. I hope you are right mate!
  • I guess I'm just the ultimate optimist.
I think that at the start of every year, we have to go in with optimism, as every team is on a level playing field come Rd 1.
SK can definitely turn us into one of those "champion teams", so we'll have to wait and see.
  • Sorry Andy We will definitely compete, we just won't be very competitive. Does anyone remember Bozo Fultons 'cement truck' comment because I think that should apply to our inept recruitment officer (R.Reddy)
  • I think st George are a great example of a champion team. At the end of the day they did it with a team of workhorses and just two game breakers.

We have the same dynamic this year. If Kearney can turn us into a well disciplined drilled team then there is no reason for us not to make the eight.
  • I am starting to wonder if NRL is a team sport or a one man show, yes it is sad to see TT gone but I can't honestly say that he didn't make that much of an impact last season and so not so much of a loss as some might elude to. I look forward to see what impact SK has on the side as he has already caused a major change or two since taking up the role. I think that next year will be an eye opening for not just the players but also us, the supporters. Have some faith and support whatever side we put on the paddock, Parra forever.
  • History would very much agree with you Andy. Most teams that have gone into a season a stack under the cap in recent years, like the Sharks, Raiders and Penrith all endured rough seasons.

Potentially though I believe we still have more depth and quality than those sides had. However you can't totally discard a worrying trend like that.
  • I read somewhere that the Wests Tigers were about 600 k under the cap when they won the comp in 2005

They were lucky that the younger players blossomed towards the end of that year (Marshall, Lafranchi etc) plus some recycled guys from other clubs such as Prince, Hodgson and RIchards etc

    It can happen
  • Ah yer I forgot about the Tigers. Guess it still gives us some hope.

In saying that a Million is in a whole different ballpark to 600k.
  • You are right about the gulf between 600 k and 1 m

It is essentially one top line player on 400 k a year

Maybe the Tigers fluked it and all the stars were aligned. I just want the boys to be competitive and make the 8
