EXCLUSIVE: In a bold and unexpected move, the Warriors are set to throw everything at signing Parramatta Eels star Feleti Mateo.

The Kiwi NRL franchise will offer Mateo a stunning deal in an effort to lure him across the Tasman for the 2011 season.

The Warriors have already had some preliminary discussions with Mateo’s agent David Riolo about signing the giant match-winning utility who could be squeezed out of re-signing with the Eels due to salary cap pressures.

“The Warriors are determined to go big in a bid to get him, an Australian-based source told Sunday News.

Warriors recruitment boss Dean Bell confirmed the club’s interest in the 25-year-old Tongan international.

“Mateo’s what we would call a potential marquee player,” Bell told Sunday News.

“He’s also one we think would add a lot of quality to our side.

“We’re still very early in the piece.

“We have simply expressed an interest and that’s as far as things have gone at this stage.”

Mateo is off contract at the end of the season and reports in Australia have suggested the Eels may have to let him go due to salary cap constraints.

The Eels, though, have indicated they want to keep him, suggesting clubs including the Warriors may be forced into a bidding war if they want to sign him.

As well as the Warriors, the Bulldogs are also understood to be keen on Mateo.

“The Warriors are one club who has expressed an interest in Feleti,” Riolo told Sunday News.

“It would be premature to say he will be leaving Parramatta, though.

“But who knows? He may well do just that once all the options are in front of him.

“The Warriors have told me they are interested and I said that when the time arises we will have a chat with them.

“I don’t know whether Feleti would be interested in moving to New Zealand. I haven’t had that discussion with him yet.

“It’s still January and there’s plenty of time to sort out his future.”

Bell, meanwhile, said the Warriors had also identified other potential signings for the 2011 season besides Mateo.

  • I don't think we should be surprised by this kind of speculation at this point in the season.
Feleti is contracted to the Eels until the end of 2010. He is a sensational player and I'm sure every club would be interested in signing him. He would add something very special to any team he played for. This kind of talk happens every time a quality player is coming towards the end of his current contract.

Here's something different to think about....
Obviously as Eels fans we all want him to stay in the Blue and Gold. I wonder what is best for Feleti though.
Can he earn much bigger bucks elsewhere for doing what he is currently doing?
Is it in the best interest of the greater game for him to go to a team like the Warriors? Could they build a successful side around him for the future? Does a better Warriors mean a better NRL?

I hope we sign him up early on in the season and he can concentrate on having his best NRL season yet.
    • Yeh they sure do !
  • As long as he doesnt go to the dogs and his happy .. Im happy for him ! :)

But i want him to stay like all of us eels fans! :P
  • MATEO WILL WANT TO STAY WITH THE WINNING TEAM , SORRY WARRIORS YOU WONT MAKE TOP 8
  • Mateo wants to be an Eel. He's going to win a premiership with the eels this year. He's a Parramatta Junior. His family live in the area and all support Parramatta too. He's not going anywhere.
  • Feleti Mateo stays at all costs....we can't lose another great parra junior.(or can we ?).Ozzy won't let it happen!
  • - Played for Lalor Park ( PARRAMATTA JUNIOR )
    - Family live in this area.
    - All his family go for Parramatta and I know some of them and they do.
    - His not upset .. He just wants to play more on the field.
    - He said he wants more time on the field and then everyone come and become intersted in him.

    - I heard that if the dogs are gonna sign him there gonna sign him before the semis so they can distract Parra a little bit but maybe thats a load of crap.
  • tell them to get their own juniors i reckon, whats with all the other clubs wanting our players, we do all the hard work to raise them up and just as we are starting to get advantages of the hard work another club comes and takes them so sick of it.. mateo is a must at our club, id let burt, cayless and grothe go for him
  • If he left, would rather see him in a Warriors shirt than a Canterbury shirt
    • 4 sure!!! but hopefully not 4 sale.
