Valediction Betty Cuthbert

Condolences to family and friends on the passing of Betty Cuthbert-the greatest sprinter in Australian history. Betty lived in Erminton deep in Eel territory. I can't be sure, but I think Betty was an Eels supporter. I know that in the eighties Erminton was emptied of its folk on the pious day when the Eels were playing at Cumberland oval. I used to go to dances then and often word got around that Betty was at the dance. I wanted to ask her for a dance but circumstances prevented me from doing so. First, I could not dance!,then I was blotto with too much drink and then I was in complete awe of her. At her peak I heard her say in an interview that in primary school and into secondary school she used to beat all the boys in sprint races! She said that the boys did not like it one little bit! Nothing has changed. God bless you Betty,we will never see your like again.

  • A fantastic Aussie athlete and an even greater Australian Idol and ambassador, a sad loss indeed

  • A great woman, athlete, mother, ambassador, role model and a dedicated Christian. Well, done Betty Cuthbert and My condolences to all her family and the nation of Australia, you'll be sorely missed.
  • But when I'm blotto is when I can dance the best.
  • A true legend, still hold numbers that would qualify for an Olympic start. Well ahead of her time and will always be remembered for not only her athletic ability but her character as true blue aussie legend.

RIP Betty, you were and will always be remembered as one of Australia's finest athletics and true blue Aussie, great gal.

  • Betty Cuthbert was born in Merrylands and grew up in Ermington. Betty Cuthbert Avenue Ermington is named after her. Like all true champions she was always humble and gracefiul in what she achieved and she achieve some. RIP true champ.

In our well-justified praise of Ryley Smith, there is a big thing being missed: his ability to read the game and footy IQ.
