It's the era of smart phones, smart tv's, smart dolls...everything "smart".
Time to adopt the same principle for our roster - the SmartRoster.
Out go players who may have heart and some skill, but no brains.
Many recent clampdowns and rule changes in our game mean carelessness and stupidtity are gonna cost you more than ever. And the cameras on you and review systems in place mean you're unlikely to get away with it (unless you play for the Storm).
Players with heart and passion are great, but they're available everywhere. The new superquality is "Smart".
Olam yesterday cost his team a try (possibly the match) with a stupid boneheaded play when he took out Penisini in the Storm's 2nd disallowed try. It was intentional, thoughtless and completely unnessessary. If I was Bellamy, I'd play him a week in Reserves, and tell him that if he does something like that again, he can expect a more prolonged stay in Reserves.
Stoney - loved him last night, maybe redeemed himself.
But I'd rather a player with the heart and dedication of Stome without the Bonehead factor, somebody who wins you games without costing you games the next week.
Someone who, when he does something good, is not merely redeeming himself.
The times, they are a' changin'.
