this is going to hurt the NRL a lot. A bit like the IPL and domestic cricket, if they pay enough the top tier players will sign up and other comps will pick up the dregs of top tier talent in the off season. It's fortunate a lot of NRL forwards dont make a good transition.

I wouldn't call them greedy, far from it. A perfect example is State of Origin. It's said that the NRL makes a minimum of one hundred million dollars for the 3 game series, it could be more than that. Yet the players that put their bodies on the line only pocket $30,000 each per game. That equals $30,000 × 36 players x 3 games = $3,240,000. This leaves a minimum amount of $97,760,000 (or more) to the NRL. So a minimum of 97.76% of the State of Origin revenue goes elsewhere. Greedy is not something I would consider any NRL player.
Well this is a different story from what I'm talking about.
The games greed is another matter but to say these mercenaries looking for a payday aren't greedy is being wildly generous.
Facts are, the NRL's payments to players limited via the salary cap, is one of the lowest percentage of governor body revenue of all professional sporting organisations in the world. Most professional leagues throughout the world invest 50% and above to their players, without considering the huge difference between the total revenue generated from State of Origin, NRL players get 40% or below of NRL generated revenue. Considering what these players put their bodies through for 10 months of the year, to say they are overpaid or greedy is unfair.
Not only should the players earn more money, why do the NRL even award the minor premiership? The club that outperforms all other clubs throughout the 27 rounds of the competition get a prize of $100,000. If the minor premiership winning club was to divide this prize amongst their 30 man roster and coaching staff each person would possibly get about $2000 each. In comparison, the AFL minor premiership winning clubs prize is 10 times the NRL's, $1,000,000.

Players should represent themselves. If you are elite and can't negotiate and agree on a contract & the terms of said contract you've got issues.
If a player wants more money - stop giving it away.
I'm not sure exactly how many NRL players you know personally? I can tell you my thoughts regarding the players ( both past and present) I know personally. Most of them would struggle to comprehend majority of the contract being offered to them. Most of them are only interested in the amount of money they will receive each month and for how long this payment will be made. Reading, writing and understanding hasn't been there priorities throughout their schooling years. Just this week we all seen one of the games highest profile players in the NRL post a video showing himself drinking toilet water and stating that "it helps muscle recovery ". Could you imagine someone like this negotiating a multi year multi million dollar contract? Imagine the crazy deals someone like Phil Gould would manage to get signed?
However, what could work would be to have employees of the NRL look over contracts for players. The NRL could charge a small percentage fee and that money could be given back to whatever junior league competition the player came through.
What a player earns is unfair in your eyes not mine. The NRL should reward the clubs and players more fairly, no doubt but to say players aren't well paid is ludicrous.
They play 24 games, most play less, plus potential semis and SOO if selected.
That doesn't sound like too many games to me, given a year has 52 weeks and they play for 80mins a week plus some training.
If it's that hard and taxing on the human body, maybe they should try brick laying, plumbing or roofing for 48 weeks of the year. Then tell me they are not well paid for the time they put in.

The average length of career for someone who plays 1st grade Rugby League is only 50 games. Only a small percentage of players are in the game long enough to make decent money. I personally know 3 former NRL 1st grade players who all had careers cut short, 2 from injury and the other from mental health. 2 of these players represented City in the City vs Country origin, the other played international Rugby league for Samoa. 1 of the players who played City origin was considered one of the best players in his position and he is one of the youngest player to play first grade at only 16 years old. Not to mention he was a front rower. The player im talking about is Adam Ritson. The other 2 are far more recently retired. I can confirm that all 3 players didn't finish with much money at all. They are all working regular jobs now to get by and have done so soon after Rugby League finished for themselves. I would argue that Rugby league is the toughest, hardest sport in the world and the players should be paid accordingly for their involvement. Two of the highest paid people involved in NRL are Andrew Abdo and Craig Bellamy....... Neither take the hits the way the players do.
