CLUBS LINE UP FOR ORIGIN STAR

The Rabbitohs are facing the prospect of losing gun outside back Dane Gagai with The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield reporting “half a dozen” clubs are keen on the Queensland Origin star.

Gagai is off contract from 2022 and beyond and is free to talk to rivals.

Rothfield says with the cap is already taken up with big money players — and the club set to announce Latrell Mitchell’s extension — meaning they Bunnies are going to “face a battle” to keep Gagai.

“Go through their roster and I’ll give you some players who are on really big money: Damien Cook; Adam Reynolds; Cameron Murray; Cody Walker and Jai Arrow’s just joined the club on $700,00 a year,” Rothfield told Big Sports Breakfast.

“You could probably add Campbell Graham and Tom Burgess to that list of $500,000-plus players and in the next week or two they will announce a new three-year deal for Latrell Mitchell worth about $800,000 - $850,000 a season.

“That leaves a guy called Dane Gagai — who was the best player on the field in Adelaide — he is off contract and I think they’re going to face a battle to keep him because there’s a lot of clubs lining up with big cash to try and sign him.”

The 29-year-old was arguably the best player on the field in last Wednesday’s Origin series opener and his form undoubtedly caught the attention of rival clubs. With 203 NRL games, 14 Origin appearances and five Tests for Australia, Gagai will be snapped up quickly if South Sydney can’t provide him with a new deal worth his while.

If the Rabbitohs lose Gagai it would be the second player to slip through their hands due to cap pressure following reports Corey Allan could be released due to cap pressure.

Surely we make a play at him. Thoughts??

  • Plays great rarely

    Most games average

If he could play his best most of the time would be huge

    • He could be the game breaker that could get us to the next step. IF he can play consistently

  • Heard that old mate Chambers from Storm now playing in Japan is looking for a gig again back in NRL.  32 Can play still.   My best mate is a crazy Souths supporter and he is amazed in the variance of Gagai the souths player and gagai the Origin player.    Be hard one.

    • Correct; different to club consistency than origin, no thanks.

  • Depends on which Dane Gagai we're getting, Origin Gagai or club Gagai

  • Terrible idea. Hes old and will only play for the money. What inspiration does Parra offer him other than money. Rather bring a junior up.

  • No thanks too much coin for a far older inconsistent player.

My monies and wish is for Haden or Chrihton. Sign bloody Mansour if he gets us Chrihton

      • Same situation with Staggs as we had getting Blake from the riff.

  • He only comes out to play for QLD. Everyone knows that.

    We are not after Gagai.
