Thoughts on Hayze Dunster?

Does the kid need more time?
I was initially happy for him to crack the starting line up but i have to say im a little dissapointed.
Big challenge for him this week against in form Broncos wingers, hopefully he aims up and proves me wrong

  • It's a tough one. The last thing BA would want to do is dent his confidence further but he seems very tentative - which is 100% understandable after such a horrific injury.

Apparently he went through a period where he couldn't even watch footy, so can only imagine mentally what he's been through to get back on the park, all that rehab separated from the team, and he probably knows another bad injury on that leg, it's over.

In saying that still did a few good things, that intercept saved a try & we then scored one. Important turnaround.

It does feel as though physically and mentally he is just not there but would dropping him now do more damage than good? It's not as if we have a heap of wingers knocking on the door.

For Dunster, maybe it's best to stay in first grade and build back confidence, for the team, is it better right now to have Simmo / Waqa or Russell on that wing while Dunster builds back mentally & physically in reserves?

Can see it from both sides.

    • I dont know NOS, might be good for Haze to head back to NSW cup with Simonsson back. If anything it will help as he has that speed of the NRL back in his mind and can ease back to full confidence in NSW cup. Giving him the two games will do wonders. You can tell Haze still needs time in cup, so i do not think it will damage his confidence, more so helping his development back from injury.

Though if he stays then so be it. I respect your opinion as i do not 100% disagree with it, as both ways he can gain confidence, but is it better to work on confidence in NSW Cup or in the NRL?

I do not think it is smart to have against Oates though.

      • Great points, LB. Don't disagree with what you are saying.

Plus, at the end of the day, it has to be a team first mentality.

How that is communicated to him could be very important for him, which I am sure BA would understand the best approach if he replaces him.

Thats also a good point, Oates, and the Broncos in general are going brillaintly on their edges with Walsh tearing it up, it could do more damage to his confidence than good.

  • I think his debilitating injuries has made him extra cautious which is effecting his game. He may never amount to the potential prior to his injury. He needs to be in reserves as he's a liability. It would be horrific if injured himself again. I think Brad Arthur for the sake of the young man's future have him not play

  • He's obviously not back to where he was pre injury I don't think he should be in first grade yet but maybe it was done out of pure necessity. I really hope he can get back to a level where he will be effective at NRL level I really do. That was such a shame that injury and it was an illegal hip drop tackle too. Really bad one.

  • Looks like he needs plenty of time to get his confidence back. I thought both he and Russel were glaring weaknesses. Both are potential good first graders but for now I would put Simmo left centre and Russel on right wing, Haze back to Reserves

    • Yep I agree mate. They are both liabilities at the moment they both need time. Simonson to centre Russell to wing. Dunster to reserve grade

    • I'd love to know what on earth people saw in Russell's game yesterday to be so critical? I am impressed by him

      • He lacked confidence and his team mates seemed to lack confidence in him. He also missed a few tackles. Don't think he is ready for centre yet. Maybe soon. Both Russell and Haze look like great players. Just a bit out of their depth.
