Thoughts on forwards aggression

Stemming from last nights origin win.

The obvious in your face aggression by Angus Crichton & Liam Martin. It worked, it rattled qld.
Think to our pack, its something we dont have.

We have soft pansy forwards. Occasionly RCG can be aggressive, but in big games, 1 or 2 need to set a platform and get opposition teams pack in a push n shove.

YES, penalties will be given away, but im ok with that.
We need that kind of couple forwards.

Roosters have it with JWH, although he goes too far gettin binned alot. Im not saying take cheap shots or high tackles, but ruffle them up type niggle.

Something i admire about the Raiders too

  • 100% correct.

Our forwards have for a very long time, been easliy dominated by other packs and its the cause of 80% of the losses.

  • Interesting you think that about our forwards.

I thought our forwards were getting us into position to score and our outside backs were letting us down time and time again. Same in defense I thought the forwards were aiming up but the edges and backs outwide were taking the wrong defensive option.

Last night I saw what good edge running can do and what good outside backs are capable of given half a chance. Some of our backs cant even hold onto the ball whilst trying to score, nor stay inside touch at times. Moses was awesome and he deserves better outside backs to capitalise on his work.

    • I hear you, im talking about the aggression factor though, not ball playing or 2nd phase plays.  We need a no nonsense kinda tough nut or 2.

  • I will stand by RCG. He is our pack leader and has aggression. Paulo is our so called pack leader being co captain offers next to nothing in terms of controlled aggression. He now plays like he has lost passion and it is just a a routine and job. Seems to have to no fire in the belly.  I suspect BA''s chase the collision and one out smash it up for years now has taken its toll. Lane, big man and never shows aggression or passion. Not once, have I seen a kill and destroy the opposition from him. Hopgood is aggressive and passionate. Carty has it on occasions. Matto, can be, but isn't. What does it take to fire these feckers up? We have a good pack on paper, but they need to have and show an attitude that puts fear into the opposition.

    • X a billion trillion with all of those observations

def RCG and carty most passionate - carty has been quieter lately ( understandably )

    • I think you hit it right on the head there EE. How long can you keep asking the guys to "chase the collision" and throw themselves into contact without self preservation before they burn out?

  • these same forwards don't give that same aggression week in week out  they come out for a few games

  • Couldn't agree more. We've not had real type mongrels since the Brian Smith teams for me.
Beau Scott comes to mind; but agreed.

    • Nathan Brown had that in his game. Often ran the line between legal aggression and a penalty/bin.

  • The game was refereed differently to a normal NRL game. There was so much more allowed last night than normally allowed. You rarely see that much aggression for that length of the game in normal matches.
In saying that, if Angus Crighton is still available for next year we should be trying to get him. He's in career form and would bring that edge aggression we need
