There is more to Hodgson than ability

With the Hodgson signing, it is more than Parramatta bringing him in hoping he can recapture lost form. Though that is a legitamate and relistic reason to bring him in, it is also the leadership he brings to a squad. Being co-captain at Canberra, he seems to be a natural leader. Look at us at the moment, if Gutho went down who is our clear cut vice-captain? we umm and ahhh over maybe Moses or Nathan Brown but ideally do not want either of them leading our team for very long. Hodgson on the other team is more than capable of leading us forward, he is that leader of the forwards that we have been lacking.

Am i saying i would prefer Hodgson over Mahoney for 2022 or 2023? of course not, but Hodgson does offer some things Mahoney can not, well at this stage at least. I also believe the big factor to the quick agreement in contract is life after football, i believe Parramatta have a role for Hodgson at the club afterwards and what a voice he would be. Though we knock say Matt Arthur, who knows what Hodgson and Ennis could do for a kid like him coming through, two brains of a former origin and premiership winner and a test player/NRL grand finalist.

Hodgson could level out more in his career adding more off the ball for our team, leading our forwards and allowing Moses more time and focus on other areas of the game. Not saying Mahoney did not do that but let's be fair, we all touted Mahoney as a future captain but he was no where near ready to be a leader, Hodgson is a natural leader and will take the forwards and this team along with Gutho and Moses by the scruff of the neck.

  • We have 3 young hookers asde from Matt Arthur comng thru. One of them will get the bench spot, possbly Hands. They will backup Hodgson and hopefully be ready when he is done. Im seeing it as a sign of faith in our upcoming hooker stocks. If we signed Robson or Verills their path would be blocked.

    • That's a very valid point. I think you might be on the money there PM.

  • At the moment Hodgson is twice the footballer that Mahoney is and probably will ever be.

    • Thats true enough right now, but a season is a long time

      • Dogs are strugglng to fit him in n 23 but Id take JH now.

    • Keep telling ourselves that, what ever it takes to get us through the feeling of rejection..

      • Tanky mate, what's Reed done to date ? He couldn't even squeeze an injured Grant out of the Origin team. He hasn't performed well in a semi final. He hasn't even really stamped his mark on a club game . He's played well at club level , but he's never owned one.   He's done nothing other than show some potential.  As I've pointed out in other threads , the best all round game of footy our team has played in decades we had Lussick as our Hooker.

        • BA would be aware of this and is maybe why the club was only prepared to offer a certain amount to Reed. You may have to take slight unders to stay at Parra, but if you want the big bucks you need to earn them.

        • BEM  here's my initial reaction to Hodgsons signing and Reed leaving.  . "We should get Lussick "

    • Agree Fathead. Mahoney is highly overrated and will turn to crap at the Bulldogs

"I could easily see him popping up at Canterbury , Newcastle , wests or Souths ( should they miss out on Wayneo) . I think Wests could benefit from him as head coach big time. "

"Blake was good in 2019 as he only joined mid season that year. From 2020 he was horrible. He did have a decent end to the season when we got knocked out my Penrith in the finals in a close game, but that's about it. "

"Newcastle won too without Ponga. But injuries have effected our seasons, 2025 will be fine."
