The Ticking Time Bomb

Time is everything & the time is now. I’m sure the majority agree that we will not be winning the comp this year. With that being the case the club needs to make a coaching decision sooner rather than later, I’m not saying rush in & choose any coach, but there is no better time then right now for our club hierarchy to plan for our coaching future.

There are many options that exist for our club, most of which are written about daily on this site.

The whole point of my blog is no matter which way the club decides to go, the longer it takes to put a plan in place the longer it will take for us to become a serious premiership winning team. We will not get the best out of what we have got &/or attract the player(s) we need with such coach uncertainty.

What I would like to see?

Robinson or Bennett to be our coach. If it was Robbo we wouldn’t be able to secure him until the end of next year. I’d be happy to take the team in the interim:)

If neither of the above is appointed, I’m really unsure, all coaches mentioned Flanno, Green, Fittler, Ciraldo, Anderson etc etc all come with question marks for mine, I’ll leave that to the judgement of the power brokers within our club, that's why they are appointed in their respective positions and if they get it wrong they should be held accountable.

  • Interesting Philosophy...."if they get it wrong they should be accountable". sounds like a threat.

Bennett or Robinson would be great but it seems highly unlikely, my mother taught me to understand, just because I like it doesn't mean you can have it. I think I was at least 5 at the time she said this.

Now back to the thrust of what your saying, yes we need to be proactive now.....appoint an interim/caretaker coach....I say Flanagan because he is more than capable for the permanent gig....but it will be for just 4 games, hopefully he has the background and experience to "maybe" reorganise us and if he creates a good enough impression with the playing group, then picks himself for the next two years.

Selection day today, BA picks the side (as usual) then hands over! good bye Brad, thanks for the memories, you did a great job, shame you picked your son and lost all objectivity with the football team. Next time at least wait until he is Reserve Grade standard before you pick him in first grade.

    • Well said Pops, I hope you had another good Tuesday!

    • Well assessed Pops, my Nan taught me something similar. "You can't have everything you want because it isn't good for you".

Quite a few of us have been saying for sometime that the decision to pick his son and then to continue to do so was  GRAVE MISTAKE because it gradually undermined the confidence which the players had in him. Now there appears to be two different mindsets internally of opposing groups of pro and anti BA supporters with ever increasing animosity within the whole

I believe the only way to restore a single minded objective of unity is as you say. "BA picks the side, then hands over" to an interim coach after this weekend's continued malaise so that BA has no more excuses. That new coach then has 3 games at least to begin to rebuild the unified character we once had to give hope leading into a fresh preseason.

  • Don't expect anything to happen until after the football department review has been done in late October

Ill say it again, our board are mostly very senior administrators from conservative corporate professions like Jim who is from Farriers the big auditing and administrator firm that Max was from. Guys like this make considered deliberate decisions- knee jerk panic is not what you'll get even if it's justifiable

Put the kettle on and wait till Oct end

    • You know I've heard all this talk from Kent and co about the Board not being made up of 'footballing types ' and personally I'm glad they are not.
I would rather the board be staffed by profession conservative types than knee jerk reactionaries every day of the week.
The last thing a club needs is for the board to react impulsively.
That does not mean they sit back and do nothing either and personally, I'd be very disappointed if BA is still running the joint next year without major changes but any talk of interim coaches for this year just can't be supported.
Have the review and act on the findings.

      • I agree. I'm not taking interim for this year but I hope wheels are in motion behind the scenes for 2022 & beyond. Interesting times ahead.

        • FH & Mod, I agree with your board summations, you can be knee jerking or reactive, my view would be reactive with an interim coach, because it can arm me with an idea in a very small window of opportunity, without making a decision on the next coach yet. i.e. I would use the opportunity to make an asessment to enhance the longer and bigger decision I have to make.

Interpret that as you will but remember if BA goes Nov1 then his replacement is going to be in an immediate disadvantage and the players just that little more indecisive about their futures.

  • Modog I remember when the selection was between Jason Taylor and BA . Lots of discussion on this site then about who we would like to see selected. I can,t remember who I ended up going for as I know I was undecided. In hindsight I still don,t know who would have done a better job mate..It would be interesting being a fly on the wall and listening to what criteria the selectors used in their final call. Would there be any regrets by them?

Time to reflect on how we do the selection

    • Yes and No Tad, its a little like an oxymoron of knowledge that exists and knowledge to be found.

Selection criteria for the coach cannot be done by a professional placement process because there are too many abstracts......choose Ballamey/Gibson/Bennett they are all different and have all achieved success.....there is no stereotype and certainly no standout that will automatically capture the imagination of a playing group who do not respect you.

Your GM football could fit in such a situation because he would have an objective whereas the coach has so many subjective issues to deal with including his relationship with your specially chose GM.

  • I don't think the Eels should appoint a intrem coach. BA should see out 2021. There would be no gains and more hurt and noise doing that.

The board should announce Brad's tenure finishes after our last game 2021,  There are 4 or 5 coaches available now and a couple of coaching assistants who also maybe avaible.

I think we will hear in the coming weeks something along the lines of Brad agree his time is up and the board are interviewing  for a new coach, with 1 or 2 main targets.

I have no doubt the board are turning wheels in the background, but for the players and new coaches this needs to happen weeks before November 1.

The players and coaches need clarity,  some may want out, and a new coach may want to chase new players, that needs to happen ASAP.
