THE TALE OF TWO CLUBS

Read the article below, and compare the differences between the bunnies management and the rubbish that Parramatta has had since 2017.

Souths  don't sit back and tolerate failure or make excuses for it like the eels do and you only need read the part about  how the loss to the storm was the final straw.

In contrast, when Parramatta got humiliated in a record loss by the storm in 2018 when the bush coach was steering the club to the wooden spoon the eels board gave him a new contact.

Like I always said , the same people who told you that Steve Sharp was going to be wonderful for the club are the exact same people who told this rubbish and the method in which they were selected was also going to be wonderful for the club.

If you're a Souths fan, at least you know your club won't be allowed to flounder and fail for long.

For while the bunnies management aren't perfect and make mistakes, at least they have standards for their club and know when things are unacceptable enough to make changes.

Parramatta's management, on the other hand, have low standards, make excuses for failing, reward failure and don't like making changes.

NRL 2024: South Sydney CEO Blake Solly on Jason Demetriou sacking, Wayne Bennett interest

South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly has fronted the media, revealing the moment the club made the decision to sack Jason Demetriou, while confirming Wayne Bennett is a target.

South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly has lavished praise on seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett as the Rabbitohs prepare to unveil a replacement for Jason Demetriou within weeks, not months.

Solly fronted the media on Tuesday morning at Souths’ Heffron Park headquarters, outlining the board’s decision to sack Demetriou less than 24 hours earlier and hitting back at criticism of the club over their handling of his dismissal.

He also gave Bennett a ringing endorsement as the club begins the process of identifying the coach they want to lead them next season.

Bennett, who spent three years at Souths and took the club to a grand final, is at the front of that queue as he prepares to hand over the reins at the Dolphins to his successor Kristian Woolf at the end of the season.

“Wayne is one of the coaches we will talk to,” Solly said.

“Wayne had great success here, left the club on very good terms. We’ll speak to Wayne and if he’s available and he’s interested certainly we’ll progress that.

Pushed on whether Bennett’s prior success in bringing out the best in the Iikes of Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell would count in his favour, Solly said: “It’s a strong consideration. I do know Wayne likes success.

“I know he wants to win premierships, and I know he loves the values of the club and what we stand for.

“I think he’s made that pretty clear during his time here; his affection for the club, the ownership, the board and the management.

“We will certainly be speaking to Wayne because he left the place in very good shape when he left and he was very good when he was here.

“He was a pleasure to deal with.”

Demetriou was axed on Monday night after a day of deliberation at Souths, the club’s high-powered board making the call after taking into consideration the club’s woeful end to last season and awful start to this one.

Demetriou had prepared a presentation of his own to push his cause, but it eventually fell on deaf ears as the board unanimously opted to head in a different direction after convening two meetings at either end of an emotional day for the club.

Assistant coach Ben Hornby, who has been appointed as an interim for the remainder of the season, took his first training session on Tuesday morning.

The Rabbitohs gave Demetriou a stay of execution only a fortnight ago but Solly conceded the performance against Melbourne - they were flogged at AAMI Park - had been the final straw.

“Our view that the one game was indicative of an inability to turn it around and that we needed to make a quick decision,” Solly said.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t think Jason’s coach style would be able to get the change we needed, or the improvement we needed.

“Given that we sit 17th on the table and our for-and-against is 50 points worse than 16th, I think now is the time to make a change.”

Asked whether he could understand the external view that the club was a rabble, Solly shot back: “Rabble might be a strong word. I can understand it hasn’t been particularly consistent or smooth sailing over the last few weeks.

“We’ve tried to support the coach and tried to give him as much backing as we could but I think, over the weekend, everyone realised that change was needed and unfortunately the change had to be Jason.”

Solly also dismissed comments from Demetriou’s agent Chris Orr that his client had been treated poorly.

“Jason spent three years here as an assistant coach, was appointed to succeed Wayne very early on in his tenure as an assistant,” Solly said.

“The club gave Jason every single opportunity to have success and for half of that period he did. But results over the last 12 months haven’t been good enough for a club of our stature and whilst it’s no criticism of Jason and how hard he works, the last 20 games speak for themselves.

“For his agent to say he’s been treated shabbily in the context of a year’s worth of patience and support, I think is unfair. And I’m not sure Jason would share that view.”

        • People on this site fight like cats and dogs after a loss and that's because their is love and passion , then you go on TCT after a loss and it's like they have just come back from a lovely evening at the ballet.

          • Haha, Frankie.  "Opera", very witty, lol. That's true about our site. You could never accuse our site of lacking passion and a certain rawness. In a way, the reactions are fairly predictable.

The whole TCT v 1EE debate is interesting. I suppose they do things their way, and we do things our way here. That's okay. There's room for both.

Actually, I don't know the TCT site all that well, and rarely look at it. Skim over it now and again every few months or so if it gets a mention on here. I guess you'd say they have "passion". The owners had enough of it to invest time and money into making their site and plethora of regular articles written by a core group.

However, it seems to be expressed differently than here. Within tighter frameworks. For example, I don't think followers of the site can write their own blogs, right? Followers of the site just write comments in response to the blogs written by the site. So, that's a way to manage things in a more orderly fashion than here.

I prefer the freedom on here where anyone on here can write a blog, and say most things they want within reason. Sometimes the mods intervene, often not so much.

As a distant observer, perhaps you could argue TCT is a little more "politically compromised" in a sense.

They used to, or perhaps still do interviews with people in the club, so I imagine they need to tread more carefully when or if they criticize the club. Not to bite the hand that feeds them and all that. If they were to go all rough and rogue like us and say whatever the heck they wanted to, that could compromise their relationships.

Also, I'd say it's also because Sixties is a gentleman as well (from what I recall from my interactions with him many years ago when he was on this site). All that seems to be in keeping with his ideological framework. This site probably wasn't.

And we've lost some contributors over the years, in part, due to the rough and tumble nature of our site. That's life. It's not for everyone.

Really, if you wanted a more genuine gauge of the thoughts and feelings of a wider group of regular folk - regular fans with less restraints - you'd probably read what people on here say and take it with a grain of salt.

From what I understand, the board do occasionally look at this site to gauge the temperature of fans. I would doubt it has any effect on them whatsoever, though.

        • My impression of 1EE as the parent on the sideline watching there kid play footy throwing throwing a tantrum  at the poor bugger in the middle with the whistle 😂

  • South's COO Brock Schaefer just quit as well.

Apparently just about every club are now chasing him.

  • I doubt manu will return. Roosters have been going backwards the last few years and there choice in recruiting has been terrible. Jennings and gagai are mid 30's. South's let the players run the club and yet you wonder why I say they're a bigger basket case?

    • Rusty Manu has signed a 1 season deal in Japan which finishes on may next year , he will be back at the chooks . Jennings is on match payments and if Gagai signs it will be to fill Manu's spot until May .

Again you missed everything , Souths have the people who can and will put them pack on the right path , who does Parramatta have?

  • I think the club is scared to make the big decisions and has been scarred by the past. Maybe that is why they don't want to sack Arthur/or they don't want to pay out his contract because they are proper tight arses. I remember being around in 2006 and the fans were going "Smith has been here long enough, it's going stale, time for someone new" so he stepped down. In the short term it was ok, Taylor and Hagan made the semi finals/preliminary final, Anderson took us to the grand final but by 2013 we had been through five head coaches in just under six years. It was almost like a "be careful what you wish for" thing.

Going back to the board though, I don't think they are bothered to be fair. I have listened to a couple of interviews with the CEO and he seems to care more about membership numbers and crowd numbers compared to actual performances on the field.

  • Souths are very similar to the Eels at the moment. Both coaches are finding out that player led management doesn't work.

BA has used this system for years and continually talks about the players taking responsibility for their actions. Perhaps what the Eels needs is a hard nosed coach that will really kick the team in the hind quarters , including the so called leadership team ?

Andrew Johns mentioned Brain Mc Dermott over in super league who is an absolute manic for hard arsed training and responsibility. Perhaps he's the man but whatever we do we need to move on from BA pronto.

  • If we aren't well progressed in discussions with Bennett by now it's just pure negligence by Jim and the Board.
One of the main roles of C suite and Directors is risk mitigation. If they don't have the foresight to see that procrastinating now is a massive risk to next year and beyond then they are beyond help.
There's some realities that they need to accept, and should have well and truly by now.
    - We can't win the comp this year.
    - We're getting further away from a Premiership not closer.
    - The NRL side needs a new coaching voice.
    - The greatest Coach in NRL History is available for 2025

All of this is super obvious to anyone with a passing interest in the Eels NRL side. Get in done Gents. Your lack of action is THE biggest risk the club is facing right now.

    • Mutts, let's hypothetically say you were Bennett & both Souths & the Eels approach you.

One has just ripped the band-aid off & sacked the coach before R9 has begun. The other has not and has made no public moves or announcements and have not told BA of their intentions, yet. Hypothetically, of course.

What would be your thoughts on that?
