The Souths block play

Can someone smarter than me please analyse the Souths block play?
For the life of me I just can't work out why it's so, super effective   They get at least a one man overlap on almost every play. It's incredible. Most other teams including the Eels are basically wasting a play by going through a predictable, easy to defend against block play. However when Souths shift the ball they get so much success.
Someone please explain?

  • They stay deep and react to the poor defensive reads.

  • Souths have halves and a coach with Footy smarts while Parra has the rubbish , their is a very good reason why the eels score more tries from kicks than any other side , when you don't have the skills and footy nous all you just have to hope for the best with a bomb . The only way Parra were able to score against the Panthers was to put up bomb and hope for the best .

  • The speed they run at is crazy. Teams always run in on their decoy.

  • The only thing I can suggest is that they do it with such speed and precision that it gives them an overlap because the defence compacts and think their inside man hasn't got their assignment???

  • Also, they kick behind the line often, this helps put the defence in two minds.

  • Reynolds and Walker consistently get outside their man, then the block runners timing and crispness of passing is spot on.

  • Reynolds goes deep into the line before passing, defences see Walker /Mitchell / Gagai as individual attacking threats that need to be marked up on.  They all straightened up and commit defenders as they come into the line  leaving Johnson unmarked.

Contrast this with Moses to Gutho / Opociac who aren't really seen as huge threats and so can be layed off a little. Our play is to suck in defenders enough to give Sivo enough space to wind up and steamroll over the tryline.

  • Crisp and quick... very much like Melbourne. Slick, clinical, at speed, multiple players in motion but all the time in sync and part of the overall play being run.

As opposed to slow, clunky, here you have a go, no you, piss off you run, get farked you run, I'm standing still why me, I don't know, have a go anyway, no, yes, fine I'll hit it up oh look I made 1m, now I'll take 5 mins to play the ball, wait I forgot to grab my neck did anyone see, no, shit ok guess I'll play the ball then, I was about to pass to you but you were running, what's wrong with that, I don't know but I'm passing to him because he's standing still, oh shit it's the 5th tackle why does a front rower have it, kick / offload / do something.

    You get the picture...
