The Roosters - How are they cap compliant?

This question has been raised many times, but after watching last night's game I found myself asking how it was possible for this one team to have so many representative level players on their books. Having looked at their website, I compiled a list of their 17 highest profile (name) players and pondered a market value. Clubs can say that a certain player will sign for less than market value, but surely the NRL values rep level players at a certain minimum ( shall we revisit Folau here?). So let's look at the top 17, not their top 25, and consider what they are worth. I'll try to estimate and I think I'll be conservativeRTS - 500k - no doubt paid less by Roosters but will be paid $800k by WarriorsSKD - 300kTupou - 250kJennings - 400kFerguson- 350kMaloney- 500kPearce - 750kCordner - 400kGuerra - 400kKennedy - 250kJWH - 450kFriend - 500kMoa - 250kNapa - 250kAubusson - 200kEvans - 300kManu - 150kOf course these figures are all conjecture, but I've tried to ballpark based on known contracts and also some of the amounts that I know lesser players are being shopped around for. So based on the above, I have their top 17 conservatively coming in at over $6million.Even taking into account allowances and signing players at supposedly below market value, as Ferguson may have been, there are still 8 more players that need to be fitted under the cap! I'm even leaving out their up and comer Hastings and a couple of young forwards that played last night from this list. The top 13 are rep players! The next 4 are damn fine players. Seriously, all great accounting and enticements aside, it's very hard to compete against this type of line up when everyone is fit.Take out your own opinions as to whether a player is worthy of Origin (Eg Maloney, Tupou), the fact is he must be classified as this.If the Roosters are not hit with an injury crisis, they must be specials to feature in the big game at the end of the year. They were able to easily account for the Storm (minus Slater) last night and to be honest they were cruising.

  • Three words.

    Third Party Agreements.

If you have a clever club administrators you can cheat the cap easily with TPA's

  • The NRL is a joke. It's actually disgusting, the rule changes, the clear biased towards some clubs, the NRL propping up teams and certain clubs. I THINK ITS TIME FOR A NEW SUPER LEAGUE WAR.
  • NRL head quarters is in the Eastern Suburbs, therefore the Roosters are exempt from the same rules by other clubs. Section 11, clause c, part G.
How did you not now that?
  • Great blog again bud. Ive been commenting on this a fair bit in different blogs but there hasnt been a full well written blog on it. Its absolutely ridiculous. That is an article the dt should actually write. Instead of going on and on about parra & how they "cheated the cap" just simply put last year's roosters lineup next to last year's eels lineup and compare. I know we have paid overs and for players not playing but in a comp that is supposed to be equal because a salary cap is in place, it is clearly a joke.

    • I think Bert's on to something.
    • LOL. The bag looks too new and conspicuous.

  • I have been saying the same thing for ages, even Paul Kent was alluding too it a couple of months ago on 360 then the Trent Robinson rings him & he back tracks on the next show. Do me a favour Sixties do one on the Bulldogs too it looks pretty similar I am sick of playing on a different playing field, well written & straight to the point as usual
  • Add to that Electric, the favourable draws some of these teams get every year. You are right, the top 4 is decided before a ball has even been kicked.

  • 100%. And how much do they pay this USA-based company to do the draw for them? Gee, I'd be happy to do it for $100K and could do a fairer job.
