The power of the referees

The game has changed. 7-8 years back teams won games on defence, before that there was a time when ball playing flair was the in thing. The last few years possession is king. With constant fresh forwards thanks to the new interchange rules, keeping possession is so important ( nearly like NFL!) teams with good kickers keep possession and win games. Last weeks Titans Storm game awas a perfect example. Both teams can put points on, and the refs stay out of it, not wanting to upset Jarryd, C Smith or the NRL. Each team put on 12 or so points whenever they have a run of possession. This makes it so easy for the refs to control the game. A bogus penalty here or there or a missed call and they can easily make a team win. The scores and upsets this year are doing my betting mates heads in. Blowout scores from a glut of possession seem to be becoming quite commonplace.

  • Raiders first three tries followed soft penalties tonight. Soft penalties unbalance the game.
  • Agree the refs the last 4-5 years have dictated who wins. Its hard ti watch and very fustrating. Tonight though I thought the refs were decent. One bad call against us that lead to a try but before that we got away with a couple of things. A good game of footy. Even though a bit sad the effort was there but we weren't good enough. Moses when given a few weeks to get use to our structure s will be good for us
  • I like when Cummings was going to blow a penalty when Croker drop the ball
  • We are at a crucial point in the development of league. If a referee is off side with you then you lose - for the very reasons as described above. So what do you do? Slow down the play and have The bunker check every play? Have more officials in ground? Go back to one referee?
Unfortunately we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
We introduce more officialdom we slow the spectacle and lose the game.
I think we just have to put up with what we have got and hope that in the end it evens up.
When you have humans adjudicating on 50/50 calls they will get 50% wrong.
  • Get rid of wrestling coaches. They should actually spend time training a group of players in the art of communicating with influence (manipulating the ref). Cam Smith is a prime example of someone who is much smarter than a ref and can win a game on the back of mental manipulation.
  • Cam Smith is an immortal in waiting... Probably the best player in the last 30 years.
