The Players or the Coach

It's a never ending debate on who is to blame for a teams poor performance.  A lot call instantly for the sacking of the coach. Others think the coach is doing a good job, but doesn't have the cattle.
I think the last few weeks have made it an interesting topic.
Parrs beat Melbourne without a few of their best players, but you still wouldn't call a team with Ado Carr, Papenhuyzen, Nelson  a poor team. Yet we beat them despite a pretty poor effort.  A few good players down can mess up a team. Even a Bellamy coached team.
Last week a tired looking Parra got pumped by the Bunnies. The Bunnies looked like could have beat anyone on the night. They lose one marquee player and Storm come out and beat them this week.
It's pretty obvious from what I can see that losing or gaining a marquee player or two can make or break a team regardless of who is coaching.
We still don't have a rep player 7, and I'm starting to think MM never will be. Yeah he's got a good kick but just not smart enough.
I think BA is a pretty good coach, but it doesn't mattter if you don't have a few key players with the smarts to control the game.

The answer to my topic question is both! So the success of the team reality comes down to football management. Get or develop the players you need to be successful, and you get them by having a coach that attracts players. Is BA attracting quality players?

  • Both are responsible.

  • Doesn't have the cattle? Hasn't he had enough time (7 years) to find the right cattle? For mine 2016 was his best year as coach, he had the right mix for mine. Since then in every year he has coached we have had shocking parts to every season where we've looked like we're light years away from a Comp! We've also shown glimpses of a true primership force, But then let them slip with average performance's. Who's to blame for that? Don't know, You tell me.

    • GOD won't let us win . Mate I'm nearly 74 .Been going to parra games since I Was 7 .lucky enough to see 4 premierships .But a hell of a lot of shit years and it ain't been fun . So I must be a gluten for punishment.because I keep coming back for more and will still call my self an Eels fan till the toes are pointing skyward.how far will we go this year  .stuffed if I know .all I do know is we are still in third place at the moment.so if the old brain is still working. I think that means we are going better than 13 other teams . So I suppose their supporters are saying the same things as most on here that their teams are shit as well .But in ending I'll say it again  . GOD won't let us win . So let us pray .But I can't see it happening. Have a nice day everyone

      • yeah hector.Right up there with you. We were lucky enough to be alive to see Parra win those titles. We are of a select few supporters to witness this.

      • God has nothing to do with it Hector. Thats a ridiculous statement.

        • The old Monto  has resurfaced the God thing was my sick attempt at humour numnuts .as most on here want to blame everything for what happens to the Eels .probably even the next door assholes dog hope that clears it up for you and any body else

      • I'm 44 & saw all 4 myself albeit very young when they won them. Not sure god is the reason we haven't or won't win one. Last season Penrith missed the 8 and did enough shuffling in their squad to turn the whole season around and dominate, we were supposed to be a team on the rise & added matterson to an already pretty strong squad, so being in 3 rd place is no surprise to me. It's getting to this point in the season & not going to the next level to show we are contenders. The last month has shown we have slipped back to our old ways & fallen off the planet in terms of winning it all.

    • We dont have the cattle to consistently perform . And we dont have the Trainers/coach to acheive consistent results on the field like Penrith this season.

Noone knows why but it is pretty clear that we dont have many athletes in the team. Wouldnt someone that trains as often as these players eventually become athletes.? Anyone of us that have strove for peak physical conditioning over their lifetime know the change in speed off the mark and endurance when we start to physicaly peak in cardio training.

Years ago there were 2 competitors in the training reigieme. One was adamant weight lifting was the best training / fitness reigeime. The other was biased towards cardio. The weight lifter died of a heart attack in a early age.

Being in average health myself - in hospital with Kidney stones yesterday - (I am one to talk) - I have at times strove for fitness and peak fitness. Fitness is all about the oxygen exchange with blood. If your lung and heart cant mix the oxygen then you become puffed quickly. Some people puff from walking up stairs

You can carry as much muscle as you want - you look great but it dosnt give you the cardio you need to reach fitness.

Some players jog around the football field/ good for warming up but nothiing else. Parra needs to sack the fitness/endurance trainers. If these trainers cant get the players into peak fitness without causing player fatigue then the team may as well not engage fitness trainers.

The coach needs to wake up. Fitness/endurance are relative to performance and desire  on the field. If you are not fit and start to fatigue on the field then the players lose the desire to charge into the opposition and just start to go through the motions. And this is what I am seeing at the moment when parra play.

  • What a sook

  • We have the right players. However when their form slumps they should be dropped to get them back to the form they are capable of playing, otherwise they wont rely care if they have another poor one. Do you hear thst Waqa Blake, Maiko Sivo and Shaun Lane and Brad Arthur.
