The Nrl arrogance regarding next years draw

EdpendingThe senior players who promote this great game should stick solid and explore options of boycotting the start of the season or the Auckland nines. The NRL don't give a crap about player welfare if they did the RLPA would if been invited to negotiation table for next years draw. What a joke!! If the players choose to go on strike I would back them to the hilt and I'm pretty sure Greenberg and Richo would soon change their tune. They can change the draw and implement changes. JT and other senior lads need to stick solid on this if they don't the Nrl will continue walk all over them!!

  • Ed, I can see what you are saying mate, however I do not think they would do themselves any favours at all. The players (well quite a few of them) are lucky to be well paid. I know the arguments about the workload etc. and I am not an NRL player. The game is not as fast as it was 10 years ago when Parra lost to Cowboys in 2005 final. The game has got slower as the Coaches (some more than others) have worked out how to slow the game down. The refs too have allowed the game to be slowed during tackles etc. and now we have to have a shot clock! If the game was refereed correctly we would not need all these ad hoc changes.

Teams having a few 5 day turn arounds are not going to be that impacted in my view. The EPL schedule is very demanding and I am not comparing the physical side of things, but the time on the field and running. Our league guys have more hangers on than ever before, coaches, physios etc. and are paid well; and maybe the coaches need to learn to pull back during these weeks of 5 day turn around. The RLPA need to either put up or be quiet. Let the players boycott and see the result then.

  • The point I'm trying to make the Nrl did not consult the players association regarding the draw. If they did we would not be having this conversation. The clubs are worried about the money spoils from the TV agreement, they should get behind their players because end of the day if players get burnout or injured they are first ones to have a cry about player welfare. Sorry I don't agree the game today is lot slower compared to ten years ago. Today the players are lot bigger, stronger and faster. You've got second rowers built like centres and just as quick.
  • I take your point Ed about the consulting, but unfortunately the TV runs the game, and they get the choice of times etc. The ruck has been slowed over the years (Storm started this grapple) in my view and yes no doubt players are stronger but that does not mean the game is necessarily faster. I would love to see the times for ball in play from this year to 10 years ago. The ruck was definitely faster.. The players like to take the cash etc. so I say they need to cop it and play in my view.

  • I think this year (2016) is the final year that the TV networks decide when games are played so the NRL will be taking over from 2017 onwards.

    • God wish I could protest my welfare. As a mum I am on 24/7 with no turn around or 200 grand per year either! They will survive :-)
    • You need somebody to clean ze pool?
