The importance of leadership

You lead by example, that is something lacking from both Gutho and Paulo. Needed someone to grab the team by the scruff of the neck and demand excellence. Gutho is the voice of this team, where it was said Paulo is not much of a talker, though more of a lead by example player. Last year, Parramatta were in the running for Aaron Woods, everyone knocked it bar myself. The reason for that was i thought on the bench he offers experience but also leadership, we need someone on the field who is willing to take control in the heat of the moment, be a calm head and tell everyone to stay on track. Gutho, being the voice, gets frustrated in moments that do not go our way leading to some dumb things and at times dumb reactions. Hodgson is one that could very well be that player. Being in a GF, international stage and three straight prelims he has played big games, knows about pressure. Someone to make sure the game plan is sticking and we avoid going sideline to sideline.

Though i feel BA is at fault somewhat for our form, his gameplan was not an issue due to them not sticking with it, looked like they havent played together in 3 years, that is 50/50 on coach and player. But with someone like Hodgson, calmly keeping the other 12 on the field focused on the job off the ball could really take pressure off BA and the playing group. Would Hodgson of changed the result on Monday? Doubt it, but we may have looked a bit better than what we did.

Tariq Sims was another i was in favour of having, purely in leadership and experience. We need players who have been in big games to lead us. Look at Reynolds at Brisbane, changed the culture and made the squad believe and they can win without him. Finucane at Cronulla, they are a better line-up with him in the squad due to his off the ball leadership, games where Cronulla are not working is when Finucane is not there.

Not saying Gutho and Paulo should not be captain, to me you do not need a (c) to your name to be a leader, natural leaders lead regardless and that is what we need.

  • Gutho and Paulo should not be captain

    • That only leaves Moses

      • Feel like I'd prefer Moses lately. He might lack composure at times, but he clearly is passionate about results.

There's really no other option, I think Mahoney could have been a future captain but that ship has sailed.

I definitely want Dylan Brown in the club long term, maybe grooming him into more of a leader is a great plan.

  • Gutho and Paulo should not be captains.  Moses or Moses / RCG ( if for some reason we must have duals ) are the much better options.  You need players that lead by example week in week out amd that includes the  chatter which Paulo doesn't possess.

Now I know in Poppas imaginary universe Guthersons at training parking BAs car , filling up the Gatorade tubs and performing physiotherapy on our injured players , but on the paddock he's making errors you'd see in the local pub comp derby . Not fuckng remotely good enough from our on-feild coach.

    • Watch the Benji show and see what leadership looks like, Pat Carrigan puts Gutho to shame

      • Pol Pot would make a better NRL captain than Gutherson.

      • Mick. Spot on with Carrigan. Likeable, tough, on-field talker, managing, level headed, all about the team and lifting them. He's also no dummy. He's looking at weakness and opportunities. That's nous.

Wish we had him. I get goose pimples listening to him.

Moses has undeniable passion, and he was the only guy able to do anything much last week even if he was playing depressed and frustrated. He seems to be yelling a lot more than Carrigan below. Spikier. Carrigan seems to be more on point, brotherly and comprehensible, imo. And a lot fewer ears seem to be listening to Moses. Fergo and not much else.

Willie Mason was the funniest though.

I wonder. Do you think we have too many egos? Gutho, Moses, Reed.

Maybe, Reed leaving is a good thing on this front, mate. He didn't even think there was anything wrong with their attitude almost to point-blank defy Moses (Reed with a nahh, I know better attitude) who kept going on about attitude from the time he left the field on Monday to the interviews yesterday. I'd rather Moses than Reed given an ultimatum.

It's a bit like a divorce. Painful at the beginning for our team and for a while (Hodgo unlikely to not get re-injured and be off the field), but eventually it's better for everyone. Personally, I hope Reed and his Dogs go to hell and continue to get slaughtered (but that's my evil side talking).

        • I don't think that's evil at all, HOE.

It's like Christians hoping for Satan's downfall.

        • Thanks for posting HOE, we really lack an alpha figure amoungst the team - someone that can get the group laser focused when adversity comes.I definitely think there's a disconnect between Gutho and Moses, we've seen Reed override Moses on a few occasions possibly BA has glossed over this issue.I think is glaring error on BA part not to give Moses the captaincy, we need someone that can keep players in the defensive line accountable.

        • Pretty sure I heard him say "front load" in there...lol

He does sound impressive with his communication.
