The Impact and Influence of This Site

The 1eyedeel website has provided all of us with an Internet community, it has provided us with a source of "news" about our Eels and importantly it has provided us with the vehicle to express our thoughts as Parramatta fans. Many contributors here, myself included, began our association with this site as visitors reading up on news about our club. This is a significant service that our website offers.Herein lies a fact that we all need to be aware of. Many people from the Parramatta club are visitors to this site. Players, player's families and Parramatta staff read what we, as fans, have to say about our team. Think about it. Before the Internet existed, families would cut out newspaper articles to create scrapbooks of memories. Websites, along with newspapers, are the current day source of those keepsakes. It is only natural that those close to players, if not the players themselves, will visit fan sites. We see evidence of the impact on visitors in the contributions of Larissa and the obvious sourcing of stories by journalists. As fans, we do not need to feel that we cannot criticise a performance or a decision. However, we need to be aware of what constitutes a criticism and what constitutes an insult. Importantly, I am using the word "aware". I am not going to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. We have codes of conduct to cover that. However does it help any player's performance or his connection to the fans, to have insults written about him on this site? I can tell you from first hand conversations that this is a sentiment expressed to me. Players cop criticisms. It's part of their job and the coach will certainly tell them some home truths when it comes to their performances. Here's a simple analogy. There's a coach in the NRL that players have little respect for because he is abusive and insulting to his players. There are other coaches in the NRL that players respect because they are straight shooters who provide valid criticism and advice.Awareness about the spreading of "rumours" is something else to consider. We all enjoy getting to hear or read about information "leaked" to someone, but before we post are we considering whether the impact will be beneficial or detrimental to the club? The truths are often known by people who don't blog about it. Let me be clear, we all enjoy a good signing rumour but please consider whether we are perpetuating agenda driven untruths when we blog other "news". As fans we might get concerned and feel like we are helping by putting something out there. In reality, we might just be helping someone that does not have the best interests of our club at heart.Furthermore, if you've ever taken an interest in what goes on at the fan sites at other clubs, you'll know how amusing it is to see fans in meltdown. I've read fan sites of the Raiders, the Dragons and Manly. I've had a bit of a giggle to myself about what sort of fans they are. If you've never done so and feel inclined, check them out. They hurl abuses at players, coaches, administrators and each other. Hmmm.Undoubtedly this is an opinion piece. It is written under the anonymity that having a pseudonym provides. I have known and met people associated with our club prior to becoming a contributor here. Those people are aware of my name on this site so my blogs have no anonymity with them. Through being a contributor on this site I have also had the opportunity to get to know other Parramatta Eels people as well as great 1eyed community members. I consider myself very fortunate. In writing this I'm just trying to share with members the fact that their voice is heard by the club. As fans we can be critics, but we are also "supporters".Let me conclude with something that was said to me by someone within the club. "If you see something that you don't like or don't agree with you don't need to hold back from saying something. What isn't appreciated is the personal insults that just achieve nothing."

  • Hopefully our players have thick skin and the club doesn't take the views of some morons on here as the view of all fans.
On a side note, I know I've been critical of Seffa in the past, but he has been one of our better players this year, he has played the part he has been given, now if every other player does their part we might win some more games and be a solid team.
    • Our forward stocks are truly under pressure so Seffa has an important role to play. We can't use the following players - Kenny Edwards, Junior Paulo, Pauli Pauli, Richie Fa'aoso, Eric Newbigging, Kayser Pritchard. That is an entire pack! This means that players like Tepai and Choc played even though they were a bit busted. No team carries a third pack of NRL ready forwards but that is what we are up to using if we get more injuries. If you have any doubts about this, check out the Wenty pack. See how many names you recognise.
  • Hear, Hear Sixties,

I totally agree, I have been a member here for some years now and do not post much as I am in Melbourne and nowhere as knowledgeable as a lot of posters here.

I have noticed over the years an increase in personal attacks both at the team and posters on this site all uncalled for, I doubt anyone would like it if the shoe was on the other foot. In essence is it not a form of bullying and with the new laws regarding web harassment we should all be a bit careful on what we say.

I know we get frustrated and the longer we go without winning that elusive flag it will get worse but we are supporters..........Yes look it has SUPPORT in it so that means we support the Club, Team, Coach, Board and other Supporters.

I really enjoy this site and find I am always on this site looking at what News, Rumours or silly posts are made and love how passionate we all are but it is sad when posters start personal attacks especially at the Team and Players.

We are turning the corner and I for one can see the light at the end of the tunnel have Faith.

Good things will happen soon I can feel it.

    • Thanks for the response Jody. I also enjoy the banter between personalities here. The cupboard is often a source of a laugh for me, even just as a reader. If this site had nothing but negatives, I wouldn't contribute. There are great people here and a number that I trust and consider mates. As fans we have that emotional commitment to our team. When I get upset or angry I remember these words - anger opens the mouth and closes the mind.
  • Nice read this thanks. I have no doubt the players and players families read these comments but they would have a fair idea of what they will read before getting on here. If a player played well he will be praised, but if he played poorly he will cop abuse. If I were a player I'd only get on here if I played well cause I know what to expect if I didn't. Agreed constructive criticism is far better than abuse, the problem is there is a fine line between the 2 and some people, /players/ family,  will take anything outside of praise to be abuse. In the end its the person with his hand on the mouse who makes the final decision on what he or she will read.

    • Absolutely true. But human nature being what it is, people tend to want to know how other people are reacting. I also know of players who tell their loved ones that they don't want them reading newspapers or websites. I guess it comes with the territory to an extent and we are dealing with the range of motives and intellects that are evident across society as a whole. I guess I'm trying to raise an awareness that our site has a voice that can support the club as well as bring about change when it is warranted. Whenever that need for change comes, it won't be achieved by hurling personal insults. It will be achieved by criticism based on fact.
  • Don't give too much attention to Internet trolls. It's how they thrive. Sefa can fight his own battles...
  • Agreed.

  • Agree 60s I never denigrate a player personally but will criticise their performance. They are paid big money to perform. Same with some blogs or posts on blogs, I will criticise their writing but not them personally.

  • This site like all the others of a similar ilk are just a condensed cross section of society as a whole.

In my opinion you will always have a greater section that react or hit out at someone due to frustration it is only human nature but is inexcusable when it turns personal.

There are numerous news articles showing what happens when personal attacks go to far.

Some will say "Their footballers they are tough" that maybe true but what of their Children, Wives, Girlfriends, Mothers, Fathers and Siblings they read this stuff too I would imagine, Are they tough footballers?.

We have no idea who can handle this or who cannot, during my time in the military during the eighties bastardisation was a major training tool to weed out the week ones and it is not pretty what it can do to people. I have seen it push people to suicide or self harm.

Also remember its not just the team that come to this site it could be family as well, by all means we should be able to vent but constructively.
